Where do I go from here?

Should this be posted in the off topic forum? 

 

Anyway, I'm about to be 17, so I'm still pretty young but just at the time where I gotta decide what the hell I'm gonna do with my life at least for the next couple of years. Considering I live in Europe and we don't really get to change majors or anything, you just gotta decide what you do and do that for four years and then if you hate it well, sucks for you. 

 

I pretty recently discovered I have a pretty big passion for tech stuff, hardware, software and just in general. I'm building my own PC (which is going awesome ayy) but basically ever since I was like 12 my entire family kind of decided I'm good at art so that's what I'm gonna do forever and ever. I mean, I've joined the school robotics team, I'm learning programming and having a hell of a time, but I've basically exhausted all my options for pursing tech that are available. Does anyone know any cool sites/groups or online learning? 

 

How do i found more opportunity to really expand my knowledge and pursue this further?

I'm currently 17, so I know your Feel. I presonaly use this forum for learning mainly. But GOOGLE is a big help. If you ever see something on here you don't understand, Google it and search for yourself. You usually remember more when you are interested and searching for it yourself. And with that search, you might. Learn more and more about topics. 

Linus also has the tech quickie Chanel, go on there and watch a few. And remember to look up and learn about anything you don't understand. 

 

For or what you want to do or major in... I always wanted to be a preogrammer or game designer. But in recent times, I've fixed a lot of computers and realize I love solving problems and worki with my hands. So I decided to be someone who works on servers or in data centers. I'd work with tech physically and not be sitting down all the time. So you should broaden your view on tech independently and see what area you love and go with it. 

 

P.S. Lynda.com is another good site to learn stuff, but you gotta pay. And idk how you are with money, but it's a great way to learn

I'd recommend pursuing that on your own. The technology field is vast, any one website will only teach you a sliver of what's out there. I'd say start slow and pick which field interests you the most and start there, once you have a moderate understanding you can pick another, examples are: Programming, Building computers, Computer repair, Computer Networking, Computer security, Web design, Computer Forensics, Video/audio/picture editing, and much much more. Google will be your best friend. So pick a field and start researching.

You're 17, it's not like your life is fully set up and done by the time you get out of school. You can still do another school and do some part time work (or do art commissions to earn some money) it just depends on if your parents will allow you to still live at home.

Or, you do an art job (whatever you are planning on, such as doing commissions, freelance for other companies, full time work at whatever, etc.) and learn the tech stuff on the side.

 

I'm kinda on the other side of you, did/doing a software development study and I really like art now (took like a 3 year break off art and started again a year ago).

See my problem is is that It's so vast that I just have no idea what would be a good thing to focus on. Even programming is damn difficult just because there's so many ways to do this and that and so many things in general and no consensus at all on what you should start on. I have a lot of basic skills but I've never had a way to narrow things down. Any advice as to what would be a good starting point at all? Ive built a PC but don't really have the resources to start doing that stuff, and everything else seems kind of out of reach. So Web Design would work for someone more art minded, right?

Web design might be a good way to start with. I have a friend that went to school with me and he's into ruby now and making a shit load of money.

eeeh...maybe? If you know how to write HTML code. Below is the homepage for my final exam for the class I took in college. I can say that web design involves creativity so you being an art major (or art whatever else) it might maybe suit you. It's not nearly as difficult as programming but still involves a lot of memorization. Honestly I'd start by learning more of the in's and out's of computers:

What are the chips on RAM modules called?

What happens to data stored in RAM when a system is powered off?

Why is it when a 1TB HDD which is equal to 1024GB only giving you 931GB usable space?

What is in charge of the SATA ports on a motherboard?

What is in charge of the PCI_e/PCI lanes on a motherboard?

What is the difference between ECC & Non-ECC memory?

Why do CPU's have L1, L2, L3 cache?

What is hyper-threading?

What is a Front Side Bus?

What is the difference between IDE & AHCI in respect to a HDD?

What is the difference between MBR & GPT partition styles?

What is RAID? The draw backs the benefits?

 

I'd start with that then expand in other directions. It won't do you any good to be a "Specialist" it will do you good to have a little knowledge in everything.

Thats actually all very useful, thank you!! I know most of the in's and outs of HTML, but it would probably do me some good to go a little further on that.

Personally, I'd start with the computer. Learn about all the stuff in your own computer. Start with one thing, like the CPU, go deeper and deeper and learning more and more. it will branch off into multiple things. Go until you think you have a really awesome understanding of it, then move to.. say... the GPU. Learn EVERYTHING about it, and then look up and learn stuff about how the CPU and the GPU work together. Learn everything about your computer... then learn about other computers linked together... I'd say find a game and learn how that game works. How it works in your computer, how the online matchmaking works. different methods used to make it, everything. then move to more and more complicated things... like the internet of things, coding, and anything you find interesting or necessary.

Wait doesn't the UK school system make you choose a career path at age like 12? Then they have all those tests.
