Hey everybody. I've been building pcs for a while now, and want to try something new, and i feel that building a laptop sound like a nice project just different enough to be interesting. The only problem is that i dont really know much about building a laptop. i need some advice on what barebones notebooks are good, maybe some pricing schemes, anything that any of you think may be helpful. i have 800-900 dollars to do the build.

Building laptops isn't really a thing nowadays. Unlike desktop PCs, a lot of connector standards are different for different manufacturers, or soldered on, and most components are specifically designed for one model or series, rather than being universal. While it is possible to build laptops, the parts are hard to find and are generally expensive. I doubt you'd be able to do much with $900.

Maybe building a SFF PC in an unusual or custom case would be a better option.

There are no good modern bare bones laptops. These days the cpu's are solderd, most gpus are soldered(other than mobile workstations and some 17in gaming laptops.

For your budget just get a dell 7559 or lenovo y700

Actually, many of the Mobile I5 chips from last generation had actual sockets.

With the trend of slim and light devices, it's really not practical to build laptops anymore. It's near impossible to retain upgradable while making devices thin and light, so manufacturers go with soldered CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and other components instead.
