Do you still have that 280x? The 380 is a rebrand (can't even call it a refresh) of the 285 which uses the same (but cut down) core of the 280x so if you still have that 280x, keep it (unless you've already sold it or have other plans for it :P).

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

If i were you i might try to squeeze an Skylake i5 into the budget, the FX-8350 matches the 4460 in most games, but with an AMD gpu you should see more fps gains, as they have more cpu overhead in their drivers, either way though build looks good.

The 285 used the same/similar core as the 280/280x but AMD calls it Tonga instead of Tahiti because it's gotten refreshed (Just like how AMD calls the cores in 390s Grenada instead of Hawaii as they refreshed the cards) which allows them to call it something else as it's not a direct copy and paste.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

380 is the 285 core, yes.

the 285 core is based on Fiji and not on Tahiti, however. Tahiti is not remotely connected, beyond the whole architecture being called GCN. Tonga was being prepped for 20nm and was originally supposed to be a showcase of the new process before the 300 series dropped but both Nvidia nad AMD found the 20nm TSMC process to be useless so instead they opted for 28nm and higher yields.

If you already sold the 280x then just keep the 380 :D there's no real reason to switch them around as they perform about the same.

Also, if you don't mind spending $23 more for skylake then it could be worth it :D

(swapped out the PSU for that XFX 550W instead but don't worry, it's still the OEM Seasonic bronze rated ones :D not the new shitty XT series which is outsourced.)

Well Tahiti and Tonga preforms very similar in terms of gaming FPS and back then, every single review I read basically just called it a refresh as it wasn't a complete copy and paste but they are/were very similar.

They are similar, yes. But the 280 uses 200W stock whereas the 285(380) uses 150W(TDP listing is for the full 380X chip aka Tonga XT) at stock. The Tess engine on the 380 is also MUCH better than that on the 280(X) resulting in the 380 outperforming the 280 by 15% in Tess heavy scenarios. It also features double the A-sync pipelines for a greater boost under DX12.

I guess but from a DX11 and a current point of view, a 380 performs about the same as a 280x so it's not a upgrade nor a downgrade and I wouldn't even call it a sidegrade :P

Currently yes but under DX12 the 380 is, undoubtedly, superior. It also produces less heat and runs quieter, especially the Nitro cooler
