So the 1080 is about to release and I wanted to ask if its really like they all say: "its 2x the perofmance of a 980" and "faster than a titan x" etc. But is it futureproof for 4k gaming? And if so for how long?

Keep in mind, those claims are only in VR gaming, so hold on until reviewers are released from MDA.

Thats for VR only...you want to check the Y axis of the graph they showed you.

SO

If you want VR gaming, wait for those GPUs

else,

You want to grab the cheapest 980ti SLI combo right now..bear in mind ; only buying used is profitable right now. Else you might want to wait.

IMO if you want to game 4K now get the 1080. If you are willing to wait, like I am, then get the 1080 Ti. That thing should be hella futureproof.

Thats a hella long wait

I have a GTX 980 OC'd at 1530mhz and there aren't any games I am super dying to play right now. So I'll wait for the 1080 Ti and a good 40" 40K monitor.

GTX Titan 9000, 125 000 Cuda cores, 8 TB Vram HBM99.

Honestly, if u want to game on 4K u need the best card u can get. Atm its 980Ti, soon it will be 1080 and then possibly 1080ti or Titan 1000.

Well i suppose that'd do....personally I think there cannot be an impressive jump in the case of the 1080ti as compared to the 980 to 980ti jump. But thats just me...

980 to 980 Ti was ~30% OC vs OC. so 35 FPS @ 4K would only be ~45 on the 980 Ti.

1080 is supposed to be 1.3-1.4x of a 980 Ti,  = 63 fps

If we get another 25% from 1080 to 1080 TI that equals ~79 FPS

So 980 -> 1080 Ti would be a whopping 125%/2.25x improvement.

Even 20% would be huge. If 1080 can do 4k at 60 FPS, then 1080 Ti would be 72 which is a whopping 12 FPS. That is atleast 2 or 3 settings closer to Ultra.
