290x black screen

Evening. I've bought a HIS 290x and it black screens all the time. I've looked around and tried putting it on 2 rails. And i think i did. though I'm not sure what a rail is. a slot is a rail? a collection of slots? anyway, it worked fine for a week or so then black screened. i can't use afterburner because it won't stay alive long enough for me to open it and change voltage settings. Tried switching PCIe slots, that didn't work either.

 

Mobo: GA-Z97x UD3H

 

PSU: 750 w Antec High Current Pro (Link)

 

GPU: HIS 290x

 

CPU: 4690k

Is it overclocked at all?

No over clock. and as far as i can tell its not hot at all. i touched the radiator and it wasn't hot at all.

That's probably the problem. The rad isn't transferring heat. The 290X is a hot card. Take the block off and put new thermal paste on it.

After 30 seconds it would be hot enough to feel?

depends on what it is doing. Use HW monitor and report the temps please.

I can't get it to stay on long enough to get to windows.

could be your psu dying

Get some thermal paste and apply it and see if it helps. If not, the card is probably dead/damaged.

Hopefully its just the thermal paste and not the card or PSU. If it is one of those, hope its the PSU

I had my PC shutting off on me when I went into intensive things (games) and I figured out ti was the psu.

Not the whole PC though. just the screen goes black. everything is still running including the gpu.

Update the vbios. A lot of the earlier cards had black screen problems

Its been fixed =D. i had it plugged into a 25a and a 60a  rail rather than 2 60s. Whoops.
