First Gaming Build

Go to solution Solved by Aytex,

Go for an r9 380 for more preformance, and keep the i3 4170

Hi there!

I'm mainly looking to play some older games; Team Fortress 2, Star Trek Online, Bioshock series, and maybe something like GTAV every once in a while.  Maxing out the settings isn't a huge concern, I'd be content with med-high at 1080p.  I would also like to use it for OBS and capturing gameplay from my Xbox 360.

I can't decide on either the Pentium G3258 or an i3-4170. I can pick up an i3-4170 for around $40.00 vs the G3258 at around $65.  I'm pretty much looking for what would be the best "placeholder" cpu until I can upgrade to an i5k or i7k.  Would the G3258 overclocked be better than the i3-4170 with hyperthreading? I've seen arguments for both but nothing really decisive.

Thanks!

Check out the build at PC Part Picker.

500w is more than enough

Their drivers are fine, its just nvidia fanboys being oblivious

That's just nvidia fan boys trying to save their company, and AMD has done a great job on their drives...so at this point it's a myth

Check out the build at PC Part Picker.

You're paying a lot of money for that case. Pick up a Fractal Core 1000 for $25 $30.

You're also paying too much for the motherboard. By the time you have the money to upgrade the i3, you'll be better off saving on the mobo now and getting a new generation part.

And with the spare money get a bigger SSD and a 1TB HDD.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here
