I'm getting ready to build a video editing machine for my brother in law (he was going to buy the Mac Pro trashcan for $4,000) and wanted to get one last round of feedback.

The video card going in will be a 1070 when its released, until then he won't have a video card. Will that be ok? I assume it will just slow down his rendering since premiere wont be able to take advantage of the gpu to speed up rendering. He also might get a 4k monitor since he creates a lot of 4k video, if it fits his budget.

-new gpu's some times arent supported for a few months on some software. Check others before buying it for premiere

-Get better monitors. You probably want a nice ips 27in screen as they look better, and fast renders are useless if your colors are off

-If your running those drives in raid 0 backup daily or more.

you dont have onboard gpu so you wont have a display unless you use a temporary dgpu for now

and slightly overkill psu wattage, 650W or even 550W will do, go with 650W if you want a ton of headroom

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

You really want to trust his data on Seagate drives? I'd switch for WD blue/blacks. Given the intended purpose, probably WD black's.

My initial thoughts were the same, I had heard so many negative things about Seagate.

Seagate drives are fine.

This is what I heard on the forums and they are so much less expensive!

NAS coming soon for backups, currently he will be backing up on some 2-3tb externals. Just the files, not the system for now. Good to know on the GPU, maybe it will be worth getting a cheaper card for now until its supported?

the important thing to note about your plan is that this build will not work without a dgpu

because there's no igpu for the 5820k AFAIK

so u can build it after you get everything ready including the gpu

or you can build it ahead of time if you have a spare dgpu laying around that you can pop in temporarily

Oh wow, I didn't even notice there was no onboard video... Well my home PC needs a GPU upgrade from its GTX 650. I'll get something inexpensive as a temporary card and replace my old card with it once we upgrade him.

I feel so dumb lol.

dw, i almost missed it too as iGPU is taken for granted on intel cpus lol

what i suggest you do is just hold out on the build until the 1070 launches

maybe you can buy parts that are on sale while waiting :P save some cash

Thats true, do you think most popular programs will be ready to use the 1070 on its release?

Currently he is using a 2010 iMac (the all in one) and its killing his turnaround time. Buying a 950 for my computer would be a pretty big upgrade though and a good excuse to give my wife ;) Might be worth putting the 950 in for now and replacing it later.

it should be compatible with most, if not all, programs upon launch

well it's up to you to decide what your plan is lol

btw you could get beefier cooler if you wanna overclock more or get lower temps or both

as well as maybe a better case? if he's into that sort of things lol

I'm going to avoid overclocking as I think at stock speed he will be amazed by the speed increase. Less chance of me messing something up and the build breaking. Originally we had a 980ti in there so we saved money on the case and cooler to come in under $2000 budget, I can definitely upgrade those now.
