My current build:

Mobo - MSI Z87‑G55 ATX Motherboard ‑ LGA1150 Socket

GPU - EVGA GTX 780 w/ACX cooler, superclocked

CPU - i5-4670k oc'd @ 4.4 GHz

PSU - Corsair 750W

Cooler - Corsair 100H

Monitor - BenQ XL2420z 144hz running at 1080p

I've seen all of the GTX 1080 get announced the other day, as well as Battlefield 1 and I've been thinking it's time to upgrade. Specifically the GPU, even if it's just adding another 780. A new processor wouldn't hurt, but I'm looking for some tips when it comes to new benchmarks on the 1080, or the 980 Ti, and where my 780 compares.

Thanks!

1. If you want to upgrade you should go to x99 or skylake

2. The 1080 isn't even out yet man! give it a month or two

Yes, yes, I know. Never too early to start planning though! Can I get some links to what you're talking about with the x99? I've never heard of that.

x99 is the high end chipset for the last generation supporting intel's higher end cpus but i would recommend going to skylake/z170 the current generation chipset instead. imo i dont think going to a i5 6500k is a worthwhile upgrade from your current cpu so i would recommend i7 6700k

x99 is just the chipset name of lga 2011-3 haswell-e, or the I7 5820k, 5930k, 5960x, and various xeons. basically just higher end than the mainstrealm lga 11xx sockets

Alright. The main thing I'm thinking about upgrading is my CPU for sure, so that'll be thing 1.

Wait, so the i5 that I have isn't bad? I've been under the impression that I was being bottlenecked by my CPU (even though I've averaged 75 FPS in most games for the past 3 years). Is this not true?

not true at all, the i5 is rarely a bottleneck for any single gpu setup

i'm rocking something very similar and it really isn't a bottleneck even with a high end graphics card

The X99 is called a chipset. You're currently running what is called Z87. X99 is the most premiere/enthusiast platform and usually the pricey-est. However, I'm running Z97, the newer version of yours, and I run games just fine on my 960. I'm totally gonna get a 1070 because even though my 960 can run my 3440x1440 monitor pretty well with some toned down settings, it gets kind of hectic when trying to record with OBS due to the insane resolution.

Here's the X99 build I want to move up to in the future:

I think going to the X99 would be good for me (I'm planning recording with OBS as well as rendering), but if I do, my GPU would definitely have to be upgraded. RESEARCH!
