is it normal for a touch screen to be unresponsive without glass?

so im replacing the glass on my htc m7, and im wondering, the touch isnt regestering. the screen so far turns on, and is displaing correctly, but is the screen not working properly because it doesnt have glass, or what?

Thanks

@W-L :)

Hmm I'm not too familiar with the unit, if it has the screen fused to the front glass/touch screen there should be cables that come off it. If it's separate then it requires the front glass for the touch interface.

Usually the touch interface is part of the glass so once you get a replacement screen you will have leads that come off of it but that can vary between phones so don't quote me on that one. Just to mention though you will need to use Loca or some other adhesive to put the new glass on just be ready for that as it's quite a complex process to get perfect results.

It's not part of the LCD in most cases, it's part of the front glass and bonded together with the glue to the LCD. You should be able to wire up the glass portion to check the touch screen so you know it works before assembling it all together.

i have a htc m7, where its "impossible to take apart" a 1/10 in repairability by ifixit.

i just scraped off the glass and locad on the new one. is it possible that i broke the touch section while taking off the old cracked glass? it waas working fine before

Three things could be the culprit, though it seems that you might've found your problem. Not sure.

  1. Glass
  2. Digitizer
  3. The Display Ribbon

Not sure that if the display ribbon was causing the touchscreen to not function but the LCD to operate.

I'm not sure of an actual way to test if a digitizer is dead. (I'm sure there's some way to tell.)

Display ribbon and connector., similar story.

Well there's the glass itself and then a PCB.

On top, that's the part you touch.

The digitizer is part of the top glass so it got removed when you took apart the glass so the new glass/digitizer is the replacement part:

Well either the glass is cracked or the PCB is bad.

Since you're replacing the glass touchscreen. It's not the former.

There we go, that's a better way to put what I was trying to get at.
