Hey guys, At the moment I have a HP Stream 11 because it is a cheap and lightweight laptop.

But in windows it can be quite laggy sometimes.

I was wondering if it would be possible to install Lubuntu or Ubuntu on my HP stream, or will I have problems with my keyboard, trackpad, sd card reader, and other driver related stuff?

Also can I install lubuntu or ubuntu on my external ssd because the main storage only has 10 GB left. And when installing, won't I have problems if it defragments my ssd because it isn't healthy for an ssd xs

And what would you advise for the laptop I have, Ubuntu or Lubuntu?

Definitely Lubuntu rather than Ubuntu--Lubuntu is awesome for most laptops if you're looking at using an Ubuntu flavor.  It should make your Stream 11 run pretty damn great.  Ubuntu uses a much more resource-intensive desktop environment (Unity) than Lubuntu does (LXDE), and has more heavyweight default programs installed.  Lubuntu switches everything over to more lightweight alternatives.

  • 4 months later...

I'm probably late. but I got a Stream 13 a few months back. Installing linux I had some issues with the wifi. It wouldn't work, but I found a guide for the specific card I had, and I had to open the case up and move an antenna cable from the main plug onto the auxiliary. I wouldn't recommend even Lubuntu, I barely noticed any difference in performance, although not needing antivirus software running is a plus. It's these junky celeron processors. I have a hard time typing things while streaming google play, and I'm running the most recent Lubuntu. I dunno but a computer should be able to do that without trouble. Maybe an absolutely bare bones distro like Bodhi could work better. I'm actually in the process of putting windows back on.
