Hi, I will soon be looking to purchase parts for my first gaming rig, I've set my mind on a R9 290 for my GPU, but for CPU i am struggling with the choice and now looking for second opinions
would it be better to go with:

  •  an older model such as a I5 3570k- i found good prices for used but in good condition
  • A new I3, I'm limited to an I3 due to my budget
  • A Pentium G3258 just based on its overclocking ability
  • and lastly either a AMD FX 8350 or one of their new APU's

I appreciate any opinions, thanks in advance

What budget/country? Sounds like you're buying the GPU used

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Total budget just for hardware is capping out at 600 US, Yes I have found a couple listings for the 290 at around 150

You could get an i5 6500 with a 380 4gb for about that much

dunno if you'd want a used 290, it was probably worked to death with bit coin mining

although the i3 6100 isn't too bad for the money either for gaming at least, it will bottleneck compared to an i5, but it'll hit 60fps in the majority of games

I personally like having a warranty, so I prefer new on big budget parts, if you are comfortable with no warranty and want the bang for the buck used GPU's can be had, depending on your region, pretty easily. 290 isn't bad but I wonder what the X or a 970 is gonna go for in your area with the 10 series coming out. On the CPU side, I'd be more comfortable going used if its quality parts, an i5 would probably be the best bang for the buck right now used.

If you were wanting to maximize your GPU money an 860k CPU from AMD might fit the bill, but if you were willing to go used an older i5 would probably be had for a similar price. I'm in Texas and our pricing may not reflect yours.

If you are looking used a LOT of it depends on your region. But remember going a little older in generation lower in Tier will open up options for less expensive ancillary parts and allow you to maximize the specifics, unlocked CPU versus a higher tier locked CPU, or 16GB of DDR3 vs 4 or 8 of DDR4,

And if you are in the US also double check places that do combo discounts, like Micro Center. AMD gets a 40 dollar discount for CPU/Mobo together and often gets an option for 8 or 16GB kits of RAM discounted as well, Intel I believe gets 20 or 30 based on the CPU and Mobo chosen with similar deals on RAM.

Thanks I will defiantly look into those combo deals because i prefer to find new parts first and then if i have to I will buy used
