Recommend a NAS chassis?

Go to solution Solved by Jarsky,

$340 for a Norco RPC-3116 http://www.amazon.com/NORCO-Mount-Hot-Swappable-Chassis-RPC-3116/dp/B00BQY37HC

Supports up to 16 drives, and has standard mount for ATX PSU & Motherboard layout.

It also has 80mm fan mounts so not too loud.

Just keep in mind that these type of chassis have a SAS backplane so you'd need HBA cards at the very least.

Newegg has some SuperMicro 1RU server chassis with 4 drive bays for around $230 but the price goes up to around $450 when you jump to 8 drive bays. For better cooling and noise reduction I might suggest going with a 2RU chassis which should bring the price down or maybe looking at something like a Dell R610 which is 1 RU, supports 6 2.5" drives, and is very quiet.

Rack mounted would be nicer, but if needed i could always swap to a traditional case, my original idea was to buy a wall mounted rack and have a 2u server and a 1u nas, I was able to find a good deal on monoprice, but unfortunately the 1u chassis only supported I believe one drive. The idea is to keep it all in a closet for noise supression. The setup would have a tiny desk to the side with a monitor and keyboard and mouse, while the server and nas are simply mounted to the wall.

Have you taken into account the depth for a rack chassis? Most 1 and 2U chasis are 600mm+. There are a few small form factor 1U designed more for a service to run in them rather than a NAS.

I finally decided on this chassis, It comes with 4 hotswappable drivebays for a raid 10, and room (according to the product page) a atx board, but I think i'm just going to stick with a mini itx board, namely this one: http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-Rack-Mini-Motherboards-C2550D4I/dp/B00GG94YDS/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=19XFQXY57F1JAXQKF5JD

You are aware how loud that will be?

Theres ways to get around it, I'm not totally sure if I can replace the fans but it will be in a closet and i'll find other methods to cool it.

Issue with 1U that you'll run into is that all of the quiet fans won't be able to move enough air to keep things cool though you might be able to get away with it because of the board you're using. The power supply though will still be really loud.

So I did some research this morning and found some 40 mm fans compatible from noctua https://pcpartpicker.com/part/noctua-case-fan-nfa4x10

They go up to about 4500 rpm which I'm not totally sure is as strong as some other fans, but they stay pretty silent i'm sure and even come with rubber grommets.
