I bought a 120gb Kingston SSDnow today, and I'm planning to use it as my boot drive.

I have installed windows 7 on it with the desire to upgrade to windows 10.

However, whenever I try to boot from the SSD, my PC restarts itself after getting past the bios splash screen, and then proceeds to boot from whatever next device it can (in this case being my old HDD with windows 10).

I have ensured that the SSD is at top priority in the boot list.

look online on how to scan for partitions on the SSD via a safe boot. I had a similar problem after switching PSUs and after scanning it I found out that it had no partitions and was wiped. Had to reinstall.

it seems the HDD has the Master Boot Record

so it only reads the HDD and boots from there instead of the SSD

you will need to redo your OS install

this time with the SSD connected

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

The OS is already installed to the SSD, not the HDD.

yes i know but the MBR which contains the information to let you boot to your OS is still in the HDD

I mean, I've installed it twice, it has the right kind of partitions I believe. It just absolutely refuses to boot using the SSD, and goes straight to the next available boot drive.

So what are you suggesting I do that I haven't already? The SSD was connected, and the OS installed to the SSD.

reinstall the OS to the SSD

disconnect the HDD before you do the above

Should I delete all partitions and allow it to create them for me? Or create a partition before I begin the install?

yes do delete all existing partitions

let Windows manage the boot partitions

After installing Windows 7 on the SSD with all HDDs disconnected, is there anything special that I have to do in order to make it boot if I set it to top priority in BIOS?

you only need to set the first boot device to be the SSD

nothing else

And this will work even if I have an HDD connected with windows 10 installed on it? That's what I'm trying to do here.

yes it will

Well I've now discovered a different problem. The PC just powers off after the BIOS splash, and then powers back on to boot from CD. This is still while trying to install windows. Currently, the BIOS is set to boot from disc primarily. So why is it powering off as if something is wrong, and then rebooting?
