Hi! I'm building a PC for a friend, and he has a pretty beefy budget that allows him to get 970/390 with a nice i5.

I have a G1 Gaming 970 (it goes up to 1560 with OC, kinda decent card). I have the possibility to tell him: Hey, get the 390 and i'll give you my 970 for it. In my country the G1 970 costs more than a Nitro 390.

Obviously i'm not going to ask money for it, and if he accepts, I will not charge him for building his PC, install Windows and that stuff.

Do you think is a nice idea to give it a shot?

Thanks :D

I mean, that´s practically a side grade either way. If he doesn´t mind why not?

I'd only give it a shot only IF my friend knows about the current situation of the 970, 390, Nvidia and AMD.

He doesn't give a damn about it tbh, and I don't want to scam him, that's why I would build his PC "for free".

He would play lots of Nvidia-optimized titles.

Thing is, he will be getting a used card. Why would anyone trade out a brand new one for a used card? You'll need loads of persuasion to get him to trade with you.

Doesn't matter if he's playing nvidia title since all you need to do is turn off gameworks.

Still, tell your friend about the current situation of the cards, the companies and all the buzz it is about them. That way, he can make an informed choice and that you won't have to feel like scamming him since if the deal goes through, he'll end up with a used card that he paid more for.

This is true. But OP is building his friend's PC for free with a used 970 for a brand new 390.

In his friend's perspective, maybe he thinks this is fair enough. We won't know until OP update us on what his friend thinks.

Kinda sounds like you're trying to rationalize it. He would be getting a used card that is a worse performer. Doesn't matter if he's playing nvidia titles, you can just turn off gameworks.

I'm trying to make a good decision. I know the 970 can be a worse performer, but luckily my 970 can OC to stock-980 levels.

I want to get the 390 for the VRAM mostly, since I will need it for college (AutoCAD and stuff). I got very lucky with the 970, I bought it when it came out for $310 USD, brand new in a good store, then I RMA'd for a minor issue 7 months ago and I got a new 970 that has a good ASCI score. So I can ramp up the clockspeeds to 1560Mhz and 8Ghz memory.

Right now a new G1 970 costs $416 (currency fell down in my country), just a bit more than a Nitro 390. Even used 970's costs more than what I paid for mine brand new.

I know that the 390 sometimes pulls ahead (and it seems that it's going to get better with DX12), but a heavily OCed 970 and a good 390 are almost neck to neck in benchmarks. I haven't said anything to my friend. His budget is like $1100 and I would build his PC for free. That means, put it together, install Windows, games, drivers etc because he doesn't know and he doesn't want to know.

Basically, the 390 will last significantly longer so if you are upgrading soon then don't scam him

how about other people that ask you to provide the building service?

Considering that the local services mostly rip them off or break half the shit in the process, I try to help out as much as I can - the most I get is a free coffee.

You're not alone. I plan, build and setup the computer for free. I'm more than happy that someone asks for my help.

Merchants I know would just charge at most $20 for it. And free if they buy the whole system from them.
