2 GTX 980s in SLI or 1 GTX 980ti

So I am planning to upgrade later on this year, but I just recently got the Acer Predator x34, which is an AWESOM monitor. However I am getting mixed answers, on what I want to do. So, should I get an additional GTX 980 so I would be running 2 GTX 980s or should I just get 1 GTX 980ti?

PC Specs

  • Processor: Intel 5820k @ 3.3GHz
  • Motherboard: MSI X99A Raider
  • RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance
  • Power Supply: Corsair HX850i
  • CPU Cooling: DeepCool GAMMAXX 400
  • Case: Thermaltake Urban S21
  • Graphics Card: MSI GTX 980
  • Storage: Intel 535 240GB SSD and 3TB WD HDD and Samsung M.2 950 PRO 256GB
  • Monitor: Acer Predator X34 Ultra Wide 21:9 3440x1440p

Paschal is the next generation Nvidia Graphics Cards expected to release in June. They will be slighlty more powerful than Maxwell but the most important thing is the price of Maxwell cards will drop significantly.

Awesome, is there any news on it like cost or things like that because I don't want to have to pay the price of a titan, but still get an awesome graphics card, but I will look up some stuff tomorrow when it launches

pricing is not known but i suspect they will be around the price of current gen's launch prices

and they are probably going to launch 1070 and 1080 (for pascal)

i have not much information for polaris releases yet (maybe bcoz im under a rock)

but rumoured to launch 490X, but really vague

So living in the US, not a lot of info flow so far on Pascal. Anyone in different time zones know anything else yet? Also, been looking at predicted price points for the 1060, 1070 and 1080. So I mean from what I've seen, the 1080 wouldn't be much more than a GTX 980Ti

:o how long were you in the hospital for!?!

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

:o how long were you in the hospital for!?!

Well, a few years ago I was diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa which is a pretty nasty autoimmune disease. So, for the past few years, up until this year, I was in and out of doctors and hospitals going under full general anesthetic to have these boils lanced (because they were in sensitive areas) So after things like that I was also on Humaira which made me feel like a stale, saltless potato chip and eventually I stopped taking it because I was tired of the fatigue, nausea and the other side effects that Humaira includes, the worst of which is the inability to shake a common cold (I got a cold and couldn't shake it for a month and a half). So recently, my parents found a doctor who specializes in HS and essentially, what he does is laser hair removal, but instead of hair it is skin... so anyway, doing this removes all the diseased areas and it has a 98% chance that it won't come back. So I did that 7 weeks ago and earlier in this year I had gone under general anesthesia about 10 times to have boils incised and drained. Most recently, last Friday, I had one of my "Family jewels" lanced and my surgeon make about a 10-15cm incision to try to clean it out, but usually these are not successful. However, I go to have my belt-line and right or left groin laser treated in September and then eventually, have the other side of the groin and my hind quarters done and after that I should be HS free. Also, if you look up HS, they are graphic images so I wouldn't go image searching for it unless you have a strong stomach.

Holy crap, really sorry to hear that.  Yeah, that's a valid excuse for pretty much anything as far as I'm concerned.  Hope it all goes well!

SLI 980s will rape the single 980Ti and kill it's family. But only in games that support/ scale well with SLI. But as everyone has already said, wait for Pascallywag. Also sorry to hear about your HS, hope you good 4 evaaar.

I think the price of Brand New Maxwell cards will NOT drop significantly.

usually just the USED ones, price will drop when people are selling Maxwell to upgrade to Pascal =P

Thanks a lot man, if I didn't have the support from my friends, family and strangers, I honestly have no clue as to what I would do and where I would be. Honestly, I'd probably be 6 feet under by now so thanks a lot to everyone who has wished me luck

  • 2 weeks later...

So since the 1080 is coming out soon I am at a cross road. So should I get another 980 and run them in SLI or get a single 1080?

In games where SLI works, 980 SLI and the 1080 seem to trade blows; which is faster depends on the game.

The real question is "is the price difference between another 980 and a new 1080 worth the fact I won't have problems related to SLI?". I think only you can answer that :)
