Dell Optiplex 755 Hackintosh

Dell Optiplex 755 Hackintosh

(Help might be needed!)

Hello everyone, so I have not been all that active on the forum recently but now that school has slowed down I am able to focus on some projects of mine :)

So basically the goal of this build is to make a working Hackintosh out of an Optiplex 755 computer running either Yosemite or El Captain. Now I know this has done many times before but I think it is about time I do my own and seeing I have some parts to throw in and make it a decent power house well why not? Hopefully if anyone here has done a hackintosh using a Dell (any model) or just a hackintosh in general they might be able to help if I get stuck along the way, any help and or input is appreciated!

Current stock system:

CPU: Pentium E2180

Ram: None

Hard Drive: 80GB WD Caviar

Motherboard: Foxconn LS-36

Case: Optiplex 755 Chassis

Power Supply: L305P-01 (305 Watt)

GPU: ATI Radeon 2400 (I believe)

This is a fun idea! But are you sure that motherboard will the support the fast 1333Mhz FSB on the Q9400? That Pentium probably has something like a 800mhz FSB.

Yes glad you asked, These 755 systems are great because they just need a bios update to support the newer chips, I have had GX620s and 745s and the GX620s only support up to the Pentium D 9xx series and the 745s support only up to the 1066 FSB Core 2 chips.

Ok so the system has BIOS version A11, I looked on Dell's website to see the latest one and was surprised to see how recent the latest updated (A22) was :D

Are you going to paint the case white to go with a Mac feel?

Possibly in the future but the system will be used in a work environment so mainly function over style in this "case" I guess :)

Gotcha.  What are you planning to do with such a hackintosh?  I have a 755 sitting in storage that I have thought about using as a very light NAS.

Garage band and iMovie would be nice to use again, personally I have not used OSX since 2007 much other than powering on my iBook G3 to clean it up. What 755 form factor do you have?

I have the same size mid tower.  I have 8gb of Kingston ram in it and a AMD HD 3650 silent from an old build.  It is only running the Core2Duo, but I have thought about picking up a C2Q from ebay to give it some juice.  A hackintosh would be fun.  Right now it sits turned off in storage.

X3220s are dirt cheap and work on these, I also believe they support the 771 mod so that might be worth giving a go. But yea with a quad core these things can pull off quite a lot :D

That is a great idea.  Now that I am looking at it.  A GT630 would be a cheap add on as well.  You sir, have inspired me.

Are you keeping stock HDD in your build or will you put in a SSD.  I have an extra SSD lying around to toss in my 755 to give it some umph.

Glad to see you're getting that system out of storage, while you're at it might as well post pictures of it here if you want :) As for the hard drive I ran crystal disk info on it and apparently it has bad sectors... Kind of sucks cause it is a snappy drive so probably going to put the 80gb or a 120gb drive in to get an install going, if all works out well I'll definitely invest in an SSD for it :D

It might take me a bit before I get around to it, but I will try and remember. :)  I will absolutely be painting it or doing something to it.  Pretty bland.

Yea they are rather modular cases so painting should not be that hard, also putting a LED fan in front would add some awesome esthetics :P

Cut some holes and put in LED strips too.

I have an LED light strip now that you remind me, uses molex though so won't be able to use it in this build :(

Nice.  Don't have a friend with a mac that you can create the install media off of?

Nope, the Virtual machine worked quite well, now I just need to fix the boot panic issues and get it installed on the dell :D

I am going to find the state of my GX755 this evening.  Thankfully I have a iMac right next to it that I can make a boot disk from. :)
