Electrical interferance Studio Monitors help???

Go to solution Solved by NoobCase,

A theory of my own.  Could it be that wireless inteference is transfered by the powercord/ac lines? Did you also change the power cards for the monitors or is the one on the left using the same? If that makes any sense

I have had my studio set up for a bir over 4 months now and just recently I have noticed that every now and then there will be a series of 11 'buzzes' in a 3-3-3-2 pattern, for need of a better word on the left channel but only in the monitor (not the sub), the photos enclosed should help you understand my setup. (my cable management is much better now and the EQ is actually inline)

There was no buzzing before this point in time and I do not know what is causing it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

Troubleshooting guide in my sig.

If nothing has changed and it randomly started, it may be really hard to identify the cause, unless the pattern means something to somebody.

Not exactly sure what sound you're describing, but it could possibly be interference from your phone if you have it on your desk, at least I think that's the sound you're describing.  One of my old speaker systems would pick up wireless noise from the phone on occasion at random times that was kind of in a pattern like you described.  No way of telling what caused it, but moving my phone a few meters away helped, so you may want to try that in the mean time.

That sounds likely, but I feel that sound should be so common to people now that he would have realised that. As for the troubleshooting, it can literally be a thousand things, from bad cable management, dirty power and radio interference to defective gear. Are you using shielded cables?

Pretty sure I'm not, my audio equipment isn't studio grade unless you include my HD600s.  It's been a while since I've had the problem though and I've changed quite a bit of my setup since then, new phone, different speakers, etc. so any one of those changes could have made a difference.  TBH I'm a little surprised, I wouldn't have expected wireless interference to be something picked up by studio monitors, but I'm not particularly knowledgeable about this, I just know it tends to happen with lower grade consumer hifi stuff.

Wireless interference is definitely a thing, my guitar rig picks up local FM stations. :D

Do not have a phone in my studio ever, those are old photos :P

Yes I have shielded cables, there should be no radio interference because I haven't changed anything wireless in my house recently and no high powered radio towers are nearby.

I know how to troubleshoot but thanks for trying

The best bet I know of is someone who described that exact sound for me and said it was because of a light dimmer.
My studio has a dedicated circuit so I know it isn't that

well my setup doesn't, just about every 20-45 minutes I get that buzzing, same pattern every time and it is only through my left monitor (yes I have swapped them around and it stays on the left side)

Cool. I'll sit back and watch people: a) suggest things already covered in the guide, and: b) not figure out what your problem is. I have zero investment in any outcome here.

Thanks for trying man, I get it, you just thought that some randoms who don't know a flac from an mp3 running around suggesting that the blinker fluid is running out.

well for what it's worth I'm glad I had a chance to show you that I actually own the studio that you seemed so sure I didn't :P

Why is it that you are always so arrogant?

If you switched everything around, it still stays on the left side and is a pattern as you described it certainly sounds like a wireless interference problem to me. I can't see what else could possibly cause the problem you're describing.

Do you know what could be causing it? I have no wireless anything in the same room as my studio and excuse me if I'm wrong but wouldn't outside interference affect all equipment equally?

Well, yes and no. Are your monitors active, and in that case is the left one the slave?

Active monitors, no slave.  Tannoy Reveal 5A's are sold as singles.

Huh, that's an interesting setup, but Tannoy certainly know what they're doing. Have you tried moving the monitor (ie stacking it on top of the right one) and seeing if the problem persists? Not exactly the perfect audio setup, but trying it out should rule out wireless interference.

I will move the monitor and wait and see if the buzzing happens

As for the interesting setup, I know. I have the PC audio to an M-audio Fast-Track, to a beringher 802 (has all my instrument and mic in lines into it) amd then the mixer to the monitors and a 15" Car sub through control room out so that I have a dedicated bass control in case I have to show off for some mates :P
Turntable to the EQ into mixer also. I got bored one day about a year ago and decided to make myself a studio so I went and bought prettymuch everything in the pics (minus the bass).

One thing that I always make sure is that power and audio cables only intersect at 90 degree angles and never run parallel with each other, I am not sure if you have done that yet, but it is worth a shot

it shouldn't make a difference in my case, just the way the sound is

Ah yes I remember that, when I'm plugging the cable into one my lower quality amps it'll pick up the radio if only partially plugged in. xD

Anyway best of luck to the OP in solving the issue, whatever it is.

This is a good tip (even better is having them not intersect at all), but is not relevant to the problem OP describes. Had this been the case it would be a constant hum, not a pattern that repeats every now and again. :)

It wasn't fixed, which got me thinking, is it possible that only my left audio cable is unsheilded, like maybe it got old and stopped sheilding (I have no clue, It's my last thought)

That should be fairly easy to figure out, try swapping your right and left speaker cables ;)

Hold on a second, have you read his troubleshooting guide?

From your responses i get you have not.

It is extremly helpful for cases such as yours.

Also, he want doubting your studio, he was doubting the fact that that qualified you of having knowledge.
