Dumb Question But Can I Use Regular Hardware for a Server?

I plan to build me a server, can I use normal hardware like a Core i7 and regular RAM DDR memory? Or do I have to use server hardware?

You can use normal hardware for servers, depending on what you're doing.

However, for some storage solutions, ECC RAM is highly recommended, and you'll generally have worse experiences in terms of reliability with non-server-grade hardware.

Sig under construction.

A server is just a computer that other computers connect to. The only difference between normal hardware and server hardware is that server hardware is generally lower power, more power efficient and is made to run 24/7. If you're just making a home server though, you can use any hardware.

no you cant. if you can then everyone would have their own private game server

jk, you can, though it depends on what you do, like tedster mentioned some good points

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

you can do anything on normal hardware, but it will be less reliable (but most of the time reliable enough for a personal usage).
