SSD for a 5 Years Old Desktop?

Mendokusai
Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

You will gain a large performance boost as the old sata interface will only bottleneck sequential transfer speeds when what makes a ssd feel fast is the random read speed and memory controller.

Hey guys,

I know just how huge a performance boost a SSD can achieve on a new system, but what about an old system?

How old? I'm talking about a Core 2 Duo E4400 purchased 5 (and a half) years ago.

The thing is only equipped with SATA 1 and 3.25 GB of DDR2 667 memory.

I know there will be performance boost for sure, but... Would I be able to feel a significant performance boost if I upgrade from my current WD Black to a SSD?

Also, do you think the performance boost is worth it?

You will notice it quite a bit. It could make a difference between a terrible user experience and a reasonably ok one.

Does anyone even use PCIe SSDs?

Hard drives at that time were extremely slow. It's the same as a SATAIII hard drive on a SATAIII interface. In fact, SATAIII hard drives don't even really get bottlenecked by the SATAI interface. You're only using about 20% of the total bandwidth with SATAIII. So an SSD will give you a massive performance boost and also make it consistent.

Oh, from the title I thought you meant for the desktop which belongs to a five year old kid.

I was thinking 'WTF'.

Get the ssd now and you can do a platform upgrade in the future. I had a Q6600 until a year ago, the only thing i upgraded was the hdd to a ssd.

I've heard that a student can say anything he/she wants
