Hola, mis amores. Como tiene taco?

Uhhhh....

Yeah. Anyway, I'm interested in looking for a CPU that would be a good choice for literally just gaming. Picture booting up Windows, straight into Steam Big Picture. The only things that are going to be installed on this are going to be Steam and whatever companion software I need for whatever games I play(Uplay, Social Club, etc). That said, this will mostly be for 1080p. The necessity is that I get NO CPU bottleneck for basically any game, though I'm not going to count things like MMOs or Arma. I absolutely need 60fps solid in game. The GPU that I have for now is a Strix 970; though even now I'm dipping below 60 in a lot of games, so that'll probably be upgrade somewhere around when the next NVIDIA cycle drops.

To reitorate, this is going to be a dedicated gaming machine. It's like a console but for Windows. And badass because it's not a console.

Should I shoot for something like an unlocked dual core that has great OC potential? Do I just have to go with something like a 6700k? I'm really struggling with figuring out what kind of CPU I should get. Also, for reference, I'm currently running a Xeon E3-1230v3 that will probably move to a workstation/browsing role.

i5 6600k is a good balance between price and gaming performance

i7 6700K if you have a bit more cash, and you'll be good for quite sometime

i5 6500 if you're on a tighter budget (its a good pair with the gtx 970 anyway)

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

maybe a i5 6500?

Oh lawd, I was equating i7 with an unlocked multiplier and not HT. My only concern is that a locked CPU isn't going to have the performance I feel like I'll probably need in some games. As of now, I'm looking at the 6600k, but are there any older platform i5-xxxxk CPUs that would do the job? I'm not looking for an upgrade path here, Skylake is definitely not necessary.

Ah, uno más que cae bajo las garras de Google Translate.

If you want to max out gaming get a i5-6500K and overclock it. Also get fast DDR4 RAM. The i7-6700K will be a bit faster but also costs $100 more.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

You might find the 4790K for less than the 6500K but you lose out on DDR4 and some games perform better on fast RAM.

Hmm. Price difference between a 4690 and 6600 is $5 on Newegg, though obviously DDR4 and an X99 board are more expensive than Z97.

Hey now, I was well aware that "como tiene taco" wasn't a sentence. I did take four years of Spanish in high school. It was more to show that I don't actually speak the language and that I'm pretty much an idiot.

Now you've got me listening to Sammy Hagar's "Mas Tequila". Gracias.

Overclocking is definitely on the agenda. So basically I'm looking at either a 4690k or a 6600k, with the main difference going to the new socket being access to DDR4?

i5-6600K is on the Z170 chipset :P

You can find Z170 motherboards starting at about 90$ US.

Shit man, I need to stop looking at so many CPUs. I swear I'm not this stupid. If it helps, I was looking at a 5820k when I was thinking about building an all-around PC instead of keeping the CPU I have now.

4690K would have you covered, but prices are close enough that I'd just go Skylake.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

If tou are just gaming then an i5 6500 is a good choice and will handle strong gpus. If you are building a new computer the price difference between ddr3 and ddr4 is nonexistent so going will ddr4 will allow you to reuse the ram if you upgrade in the new few years.

But with that xeon the only thing that is going to be better then that for gaming is an i7 6700k, and going to an i5 could lower your performance. If you want a browsing cpu, or moderate workstation cpu go for an i5 there.

The Xeon is at 3.3 with a TB of 3.7. If I get a 4690k or 6600k, I'll be OCing to 4.3+, not to mention the difference in the die itself. There's definitely going to be a large performance increase, isn't there? As far as workstation/browsing, I'm using the Xeon because of the hyperthreading for video work: editing, rendering, streaming/recording while still using the PC.

At some point, I'll probably upgrade the Xeon to a 6-core with a higher clock speed, but regardless I'm separating the two PCs for a couple of reasons. The first reason is to maximize performance on both tasks; especially when playing a particularly intensive game, recording at 1080p60 and running OBS, Chrome, Skype, Steam, the game itself, potentially servers for whatever, there's going to be a bottleneck somewhere unless I opt for a 5930 or 5960 or something, which is so much money considering I already have a CPU that's going to be all I need for the video side of things. Separating the game just gives me more room.

There's also the fact that my main rig has multiple hard drives, a sound card, capture card, large passively cooled CPU cooler, etc., and I don't want to put a large tower in my living room. Going for something like a 5930 and a NAS is going to cost more than building another PC which gives me more flexibility anyway(being able to render video/whatever on one PC while gaming on the other).
