Where are OLED monitors ???

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

Because OLED technology still has issues:

  1.  OLED displays color shift over time, as sub pixels color wears at different rates. To compensate this on phones, they make colors that wears out first bigger, than others. The reason why it doesn't look screwed up, it is because the resolution is so high for the size, that with the high DPI of 300-350% it looks fine... until you see the aliment issues. with small text or even graphics, like the new Windows logo, where the colored squared looks like 1px offset from where it should be in a direction that varies between colors (You have to pay close attention to it). Beside that, algorithms are used to compensate the colors over time, by adjusting them. This makes it a nightmare for those who do color critical work.

  2. Phones with OLED displays have a life expectancy of 3 years.... for computer monitor 5-6 years is minimum.

  3. You have image retention issue. It is fine on a phone, but on a desktop... imagine the task bar still partially visible in your game for several hours... not fun.

  4. Expensive due to low demand. Phones are massively produced... you are now asking people who has trouble justifying an entry level 6-bit panel IPS display, of 300-350$, to spend money on an OLED display? Yeeaaa.. no.

  5. Burn in. Screen save will definitely do a return, but for heavy users of the system, it is possible to have burn-in image from the taskbar, or even a program open all the time on the same spot, like an e-mail software as second display. Sure you can say "not to do it", but it is so easy to do, that no manufacturing wants to cover over the warranty within the 1 year, let alone 3 years which is standard for decent monitors.

Until these issues are solved, or improved, don't expect any OLED monitors any time soon. They have been improved in the past, including brightness, and while much better, still an issue.

So I've bought a new monitor #144HzMastetRace and it's been amazing !

A thought about better quality screens came to my mind and I couldn't think of a reason we don't have OLED monitors when we have stupid massive TVd and 5" phones with OLED who can keep their price low enough to compete with other devices (mainly Samsung phones vs other brands, I don't know about TVs).

Why does industry not get into producing OLED ??? 4K OLED IPS Monitor would be orgasmic !

Issues with image retention/burn in, display yields, the target market are many factors

Dell did have an unveiling, but not sure what happened

Is it same with TVs ? Because there's plenty OLED ones. (Asking before reading the article, my break is over... :D )

Well yeah TVs are more unique in that they can just charge like £10k for a TV and there is less of an issue with burn in (eg a PC task bar on an office PC all day would be a major issue, compared to a movie etc)

and just making all the different sized, spec, brand OLED panels in monitors is still a way off

Another year and we might start seeing them dribble down

Phones are an exception because they can make massive yields of small displays from the factory and phones sell in many many millions of units, unlike PC monitors

Mhh, IPS and OLED are 2 different technologies :Q.

There are already large OLED TVs with high resolutions, but they have horrible imput lag and will probably burn in your browser bar over time.

Like ShadowCaptain linked there is already a pretty much perfect OLED panel (amazing colours, amazing contrast, no Burn in, 4k, amazing imput lag, amazing refresh rate.....but its 5000 freaking dollars. Expect to see something affordable in 2018 or so.......Ill be waiting aswell.

Three main reasons : Cost, reliability and burn in.

OLED screens are more expensive than IPS (like wayyy more).
Reliability - OEMs can't make enough units which would pass QC. The failure rate increases as you increase the size of the panel you want to make with it. Smaller panels are prone to less issues than larger ones.
Burn in - OLED have a nasty tendency to keep something that may have been on screen and make it stay there all the time if it an image shown for a prolonged period of time. This results in the monitor not being able to show the real colours on those pixels.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.
