What do you think, a hifiman for 100$.

Whats the catch?
They are not planar, they are dynamic.

Though they still measure well:

MD-17347_20160426133927_4562e61b15968e6b

So, thoughts on them? (I know that you cant formulate much from an unreleased product, but just thoughts)

This graph tells us fuck-all about the FR without some known point of reference. But for a mere $100, it would have to be pretty bad. My only immediate concern is the apparent elevation around 5kHz and 10-13kHz. The other obvious weakness is that this is limited to massdrop, and so won't be widely recommendable.

This if nothing else is a sign that Hifiman seriously needs to step up the build quality on their more expensive models.

True, no major problems for 100$. Some peaks like you siad, but its not bad compared to other 100$ headphones

Yeah, if they can make 100$ headphones that sound good with the same build quality as their 600$+ headphones then....

I just think that this is just not a smart price-point to hit.  The $100 market is already really saturated.

There is always room to improve, though. It'll be a smart price point if they can hit a good sound signature like the HD 558 while offering better technicalities.

If I didnt have to pay a shit ton in tax, I would buy them just to see how they stack up against other headphones in the same price range, and if I like them I will keep them if I dont I will sell them for a cheap price to a friend.

I guess, would've liked a cheap-ass HE-400S tho. HE-400X for $200? :) I can hope.

I have the HE-300, looks very similar. Sounds great, but the cable inputs are annoying. The connectors are too long, so they often hit my shoulder bone when I turn my head.

And the cable that came with it, have hard plastic on it, and everytime I move my head, and the cable moves on my shirt, the friction makes sound in the headphones. (it's called microfony or something like that in my language). The one can buy other cables for it, which might solve the problem, or the ones that come with the 350 doesn't have the problem.

I really don't like detachable cables, but these screws in with a nut, which is ok enough. Don't know if it will cause connection probles after long use, like others I have had with detachable cables. (I haven't used there too much, since I have had others with better sound, and comfort)

Sorry for the few off Capital letters in my posts, it does it on its own when I Write in English, since my OS is in another Language. It's annoying.

Comprehensive measurements on SuperBAF: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-x-hifiman-he-350-measurements.1974/

Channel matching is godlike; HD800 is left in the dust.

Distortion is high, especially in the bass, which I was expecting based on Hifiman's previous dynamics.

HD 558 distortion for reference: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-x-hifiman-he-350-measurements.1974/#post-49666

Overall, seems decent for the price. The only question is, do we NEED another open headphone in this price range?

I mean, more headphones that are good in this range could possibly drive down higher priced headphones.

And there isn't that much, these, 558, sph9500, what else?

Would these be a decent upgrade from AKG K240s? (Yes, I know, they're mediocre, but they've done me well for a long while.) If not, what would? $80-$130USD, range, preferably.

  • 5 weeks later...

super late but I would like to say that massdrop is know for doing exclusive deal with headphone/DAC/amp makers wich allow them to sell some pretty good stuff at price that can be 60% under the regular price. The massdrop fostex TH-X00 is being sold at 399 $ when it's based on a 1000 $ headphones. The whole head-fi.org community love them.

The more people willing to buy an object, the lower the price will be. That's basically the whole business concept of massdrop.
