Upgrade the graphics card to a 960 or if you can somehow get a higher performance card for under $300, do that.

Yea... As my first PC build, I picked a weird card.  Why was this thing so expensive? It's not that powerful but it was like $200.

Pls don't get a r9 390. PLD DON'T. The best GPU in this price range is definitly not the r9 390.

I'd personally recommend the r9 390, but that's just IMO

  • Why are you wasting so much on four separate sticks of DDR3 RAM? Besides, why do you need more than 8GB? If this is a gaming PC, games rarely even get close to 8GB.
  • Why have you paired a locked CPU with a Z97 motherboard? You aren't going to be overclocking that Core i5 4460 anytime soon.
  • You haven't factored in the cost of your GPU or Power Supply, and there's no case to put the whole thing in.
  • You can buy a 1TB SSD for the price you're paying for that 480GB SSD. You're spending far too much on it.

All in all, I'd recommend telling us exactly how much you're willing to spend, where you live, and what you'll be using the PC for. That way, users here can come up with a much better-optimized build for your needs.

I think he has already bought the PC. UPGRADE means making something which is already in use better. This is a build from early 2013 buy the looks of it.

1) I used 2 sticks of 4 at first, but found a deal for the same kit for cheap on black Friday, thought what the heck, why not.

2) I have no intention of overclocking a CPU.  Never needed to

3) The cost is irrelevant, I just wanted to list the parts.  Its all in an NZXT Phantom 410.  Didn't list everything as there are things like extra drives, DVD reader, fan controller, etc.

4) I bought the drive refurbished on Newegg

Well, if he has $300 to blow, selling the 4460 and the GTX 660 should give him about $550 to spend. For that price, I'd recommend picking up an R9 390, a Core i5 4690k, and a Hyper 212 EVO, or a Xeon E3 1231-V3 with the stock cooler if he intends to do things other than gaming (editing, rendering, multitasking, and other tasks that benefit from having 4 additional threads).

Also, didn't the Core i5 4460 come out in mid-2014, along with the entire Haswell Refresh lineup? In fact, if I'm not wrong, so did Intel's 9-series motherboards, which were part of that lineup.

But they rock power efficiency that's for sure. Their latest drivers tho, that's a different story...

Who cares, if the cooler can handle the chip then I don't give a crap about efficiency. Especially when you cut performance for the sake of power efficiency.

I very much care about efficiency, as electricity where I live is quite pricey.
