planetside 2 still a thing

i used to play planetside 2 and then stopped and now i am planning to play it again i just have some questions

• is it popular
• if its not popular can you suggest another game (free to play)
• what happened in the updates since june 2015

I dont know about the last 2 points, but I used to play it right after launch, way back in 2012, because the the scale of the battles. granted I got fed up with the performance and stopped playing it often, but I do know a few people that still play it. One of those people plays the game while on teamspeak with quite a large clan, so I suspect its still got a following.
