Workstation - Attempt #2

Workstation V2

Hi there, I am looking to build a new Workstation/PC.

1. Budget & Location

I have a budget of approximately $27,500. I live in the U.S., and are willing to spend money if the outcome is impressive. However, I need a lot of performance, so my Workstation needs a lot of cores and Memory.

2. Aim

I am into the Graphic Design and Video Editing area of Computer Graphics, so I need multiple Graphics Cards to support my Cinema 4D and other needs. I also work with 3D design and am heavy into Video Gaming, and I need a fast enough Workstation to have 100 MB/s transfers while running Crysis 3 at 5K. I also need to be able to render a 30-minute 4K video in 12-15 min if possible, while recording another 4K Video. I also have about 20-30 Chrome or Firefox Tabs open at one time.

3. Monitors

I already have 2 Dell UP2715K's in my basement, and I am looking to drive 1 5K monitor, 2 4K monitors, and 1 34" 3440 x 1400 curved monitor.

4. Peripherals

Peripherals are not an issue since I have tons of Keyboards, Mice, and Speakers in my basement. However, I need to find a good dual 4k monitor setup, since my Dell 4K monitors were faulty.

5. Why are you upgrading?

The reason I am upgrading is because my previous Workstation was affected by viruses. I had apparently downloaded a hacked version of something, and I ran it and got tons of viruses infected, and McAfee did not detect it. (Thanks a lot, McAfee!) So, I had to survive with my not so amazing Workstation, which actually was a really good PC (Project Insidious, Specs in my signature), but was not up to the mark. So I salvaged my Quadro's (4 M6000), my Power Supply (EVGA T2 1600W 80+ Titanium), and my Case. (Cooler Master Cosmos II) So, I need a new PC because my old one was practically broken and is now lying in my basement disassembled.

If you guys have any questions, send me a Private Message. Please include a PCPartpicker Link if you are submiiting a build. Also, I would prefer a dual socket motherboard.

Why didn't you just reinstall your OS?

You're probably going to want Workstation GPUs which you can't really game on

and no GPUs will be able to run games at 5k really.

Also don't they only make 27" 5k displays? That sounds horrible to use for productivity man. the scaling would be way worse than a 4k 27" display which already has scaling issues in windows.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

I did reinstall my OS, but it turns out my CPU was faulty.

Yes, I can game on Quadros in 4-way SLI.

Again, Quadros, Titan X's, and 980 Ti's can drive 5k gaming.

Scaling in 5K isn't that bad. I have experience with 5K and have settings for my 5K needs.

Maybe 3-4 of them but like, still the game support would be really limited there and like is it even a big difference?

Anyways if I were you I'd get like 2 Radeon Pro Duos, and 2 of the new Dual GPU Fire Pro Cards that way you only need so many PCI-e slots, unless you really need CUDA, would need to dual boot that though to switch them...I don't think doing a hardware passthrough works well with multiple GPUs.

but in any case also Broadwell will be coming out soon so you could wait for that as well. Or if you need a lot of RAM you're going to want a Xeon Chip

I prefer NVIDIA, since I think they're more reliable. And besides, I do use a lot of memory and PCI-E slots, so I may consider your opinion. But what about a Titan Z? Aren't those also dual-GPU?

I don't think like anyone likes the Titan Z lol, way overpriced and it's just not a workstation card like the Older Titan Black was, which had at least some decent Double Precision performance.

Overall though AMD cards are fine, and if your Software supports Open CL you're set. They also tend to have more Compute Performance, it's just that nvidia pushed CUDA really hard so everyone is stuck with it, although it was cracked recently and it was reporting to be running on AMD cards Otoy or something like that did it. Plus you get the advantage of just a simpler set up with the dual GPU cards.

Also I don't think you need a bridge for any of the AMD cards, but that's a minor thing, Plus ya know the Pro Duo is water cooled, so heat isn't really an issue

Here's some benchmarks for the older 295x2 in quad crossfire

Really though why don't you just get like 6 27" 4k displays in an array?

or preferably 40" 4K displays

This is with korean 40" 4k displays, a truly godly set up that would put 5K to shame since you don't really need to scale the display and you can actually make use of all the pixels

And here is the set up done with 4K TVs, would require DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters for the TVs though, the Korean Displays are more like PC monitors though, and if you get something like the Wasabi Mango it can run at 1080p 120hz, so you'd have that option as well, I think it's $800 ish  for Pixel Perfect Wasabi Mangos

He had really bad luck with those particular displays.

CPUs rarely die. It's most likely the motherboard, ram, or something else. Viruses shouldn't affect the hardware unless it's one of those that can infect the bios. Updating the bios should get rid of it.
