Choosing New G-sync 1440p Gaming Monitor

baloonis

Greetings.

I want to buy a new G-sync gaming monitor 1440p but I have read of issues that may arise with backlight bleeds, IPS glowing, etc.

Is it true that you can spend almost 1,000 euro on a monitor (http://www.e-shop.gr/othoni-asus-rog-swift-pg279q-27-wqhd-ips-gaming-p-PER.170661) and then have quality issues? How important are these issues and will they affect gaming?

Can anything be done to avoid them? Maybe some manufacturers are better than others? Or do I have to rely on my luck on getting a decent unit upon delivery?

My budget is max 800 euro for the monitor and I will be using the PC to play MMORPG games at 1440p at the best settings possible.

My PC has:

* i5 6600K cpu

* 16 GB ram

* ASUS z170 pro gaming motherboard

* GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GTX 970 gpu

I know I asked many questions but I don't feel good about spending 800 euro without knowing what im getting xD Thanks.

Seek and you shall find.

the backlight bleed problem is more an issue with cheaper korean models. if you order a swift and it has it i would send it back. at that price point i would expect abaolut perfection!

i would first upgrade the gpu. because my 290 (as fast as the 970) is hardly keeping up with 2560*1080. even with g-sync you wont be able to play at highest settings.

i would sell the 970 for an amd card (maybe wait for next gen or go for fury) and then use freesync which is cheaper.

that one has great reviews:

Problem is that the rog monitors and the acer ones are nowhere near perfection. They are quite overprised, and getting a good one is like winning tens of thousands of dollars at a casino. Both Acer and Asus has shown quite well that they are after your wallet, and not you being a happy customer. If i were you i would rather buy a Benq xl2411Z and keep it until the monitor market actually has products that are worth the tons of cash it demands.

OLED may not be so far away either, so im sticking with my BenQ for another year atleast.

I own/owned the PG279Q and while it was an excellent monitor when it comes to build quality and such, the panel was less to be desired.  The QC on the monitor in terms of blb or IPS glow was horrendous.  I ended up returning the monitor and picking up two Acer XB1 monitors.  Neither have any kind of significant blb or ips glow.  It was definitely painful for me to return the Asus as my PG278Q was a great monitor and I am a big Asus fan.

I have an Acer XB270HU 1440p 144Hz IPS G-SYNC montior. I bought it when it first came out and it is truly amazing. I may have been lucky though, as I have no dead pixels and visually can't perceive any backlight bleed. BUT I am driving it with a watercooled/overclocked Titan X, so it may be worth checking what fps you would be getting in your games at that resolution with a 970 before diving in. I have seen some great deals on refurbished acer monitors on r/buildapcsales recently so that may be worth a look

While I have never owned a g sync 144hz monitor, I can comment on gaming at 1440 with a 970.

I have the Asus turbo 970 (which is a mini itx 970 that doesn't overclock well and has lower clock speeds out of the box) and have been gaming on an HP Envy 32" 1440p monitor.  While I can't max most of the games I play, I can still get 60fps on medium-high settings.  Most are on the upper range of high while a few I have to turn down to medium for some settings.  Now don't get me wrong, I'm not playing on medium settings for everything, I just have to turn down some key stuff to get good fps.  I came from a 1080p monitor where I could max all my games, but the bump in resolution is worth the upgrade imo.  Some of the games I play are Diablo 3, GTA V, Bioshock Infinite, Shadow of Mordor, Fallout 4, Assetto Corsa, Need For Speed, Elder Scrolls Online, Grim Dawn, Dragon Age Inquisition, Metro Last Light, BF4, and BF Hardline.  So a pretty good mix of fps, rpg, action and racing.  My 970 has handled all of them very well, considering the 970 was aimed at 1080p/60fps.

All my games look gorgeous and very immersive at this size and resolution.  A 970 is an easily capable card for 2560x1440, but for how long I cannot say.  It probably won't be holding up so well a couple years later, but DX 12 might help it last longer.

Hope this helps a little!
