Why exactly do you need another laptop? What's wrong with your T420?

The laptop is mostly held together by tape and superglue, which is effecting the cooler, the battery is dying, and my cpu is falling behind on some rendering tasks.

Quote my post if you need me to respond.

I assume OP has the hwtools PE4L, which offers Gen 2 speeds. I'm not sure if Ivy-Bridge ThinkPads offer Gen 3 or if hwtools has released a Gen 3 adapter. I would guess so, but I haven't kept track of the eGPU's since 2013.

The T420 is gen 2, correct. I am using the adapter which is inside the cardboard box with the fan, which I have posted both above.

Then my W520 recommendation stands. It has a much better build quality than the T420 and superior cooling. It can even handle 55W extreme edition Quad Cores. (a special cooler is needed which can be bought separately) The same is true for the W530.

The problem is the price. If you want to get a configuration that is significantly faster, or at least upgrade it yourself, then you will probably have to spend more than 400$, even for a high-spec W520.
