Charging headphones over night

I recently had this conversation with a friend of mine, who calls himself a audio "speialist".

He called me a douch for charging my headphones for longer then they need to, since the battery will get destroyed by doing that.

I got the JBl E50BT and i basicly hang them onto charging every evening at 0:00 and unplug them at ~13 when getting home from school.

Will this "abusing" of my headphones battery destroy them in the near future?

Thank you guys!

Well, overcharging any battery is going to shorten it's life, this applies to phones, laptops, RC cars, anything.

Now, batteries can be replaced, so it will not destroy the headphones.

Also, it won't make a huge difference anyways.

From an electronics standpoint, if the thing has a charge controller there will not be any difference. Since the controller will manage the charging to prevent anything stupid from happening.

Generally batteries die from staying at full/low charge for too long and general charge/discharge cycle. So I wouldn't sweat about it. The battery won't die any significantly faster or slower given the same usage pattern.

It should have a lithium battery, those require protection & charging circuitry, so it actually isn't charging any more than it needs to. It was the old batteries that could degrade due to charge abuse.

Technically their life is still reduced as they are used and recharged simply due to the degradation of electron capacity.

While Lithium batteries do have protection, the effect is still there from leaving it plugged in, it is just very very slight.

This depends on the protection circuit, the cell quality and probably a million other things. Good charge circuits should have a stop charge voltage, and a different start charge voltage so they can prevent this. Still no big deal.

Tell your friend that he is the douche in this situation, and definitely not an audio "specialist" or an audio anything for that matter.

This is 2016, any decent charging system will have proper termination and protection circuitry to avoid damaging or destroying the battery.

A built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery

Given their $145 price tag I would certainly hope that they have some sort of intelligent charging built in.

Over multiple charges and discharges the battery will degrade, however it should not degrade while being plugged in unless there is actually something wrong with it.

Rest assured, your friend is an idiot.
