I have an old Corsair CX500W that gets noisy for no reason when i'm surfing the web for about 2 hours.

The fans ramp up and it start to whine a little.

It's pretty old and dusty, so my question is, can i open it up and spray some canned air on it and clean it up? I don't know much about PSU cleaning.

Well... yes.

You should be able to clean it out with canned air without any problems.

Here's a tech yes city video about cleaning a psu:

Okay but he is not using canned air tho. But it will probably work fine.

I would suggest you clean out your PSU because if that thing blows your computer can go with it

He's using something cheaper, waaaay cheaper than canned air.
But its the same thing, except you need to wait ages before any liquid on the cheaper stuff will dry

I used canned air to clean all the psus and entire computers I fix so canned air should work fine just be sure to clean off the heatsyncs and fanblades good and also the grilles that cover the fan and back of the power supply so theres nothing blocking the intake and exhaust

hehehe, you do not want to see my psu in another computer. I have opened it multiple times to do stuff and now I have it running with bare cables straight to the motherboard lol. I have kept them in place with zip ties but mainly hazard tape to secure it. The PC works great tho...

haha, yeah we can only hope. Agreeably it is a crap PSU from some prebuilt system but I have had no problems with it and is reliable as anything. I have shorted it out many times, cut up the cables because a mouse chewed the connectors and it has even become a power supply for loads of desk fans when in the summer. They are just to name a few things that have happened to it in its previous life lol.

If this CX500 is powering the build in your signature then please replace it like naow

680s PRODUCE EVEN MORE HEAT THAN A 980TI AGH

That low temperature tolerance still applies there. Unless the 680 machine is used only very occasionally I'd replace it soon.
