Hot swap: reboot to detect drive.

Go to solution Solved by SMURG,

You have the port configured for AHCI/hot-swap in the BIOS right?

When I'm using my cases HDD dock, I can hear the drive spin up when I plug it in, but nothing happens and I have to reboot for the drive to show up. I've tried several different drives.

The drive won't even show in Disk Management. This isn't normal right? Kinda defeats the purpose of hot swap. I have a gigabyte z77x-ud3h and I believe its hooked up to one of the Intel SATA 2, 3 Gb/s ports.

1) Right click on Computer

2) Go to Manage

3) Right click on Disk Management

4) Hit Re-scan Discs

You may also have to assign a drive letter to it

Yup I've done that.

Actually I'm not sure. I just loaded the optimized defaults then enabled quick boot and overclocked. I'll check my BIOS when my downloads have finished.

Hot swap option isn't default on mobos settings. When you choose which connector to use as hotswap, better have drive in if you can't remember in which port hotswap bay is.
