cpu Laptop CPU in Desktop

Hey people,

 

I currently use a media editing laptop for my projects and gaming but due to the limitations of laptops I would like to build a desktop. The laptop's CPU is a quad core Intel i7(M) and I'm very happy with it's performace. Since I'm in a tight bugget I was concidering using this CPU in the desktop.

 

So I want to hear you thoughts on:

1. Can it be done?
2. What complications are involved?
3. Am I better off buying a new CPU?

1. Theoretically, yes, but you would have to use the laptop´s motherboard for it to work. This would just make it a laptop in a bigger case.

2. I don´t think laptop mounting holes are standered, nor the power connectors.

3. Probably.

You cannot use Mobile CPUs in a desktop board. And a quad-core laptop i7 is actually very potent so matching the performance won't be cheap

as long as they use the same socket, and the bios accepts it, they should (i highly doubt they have the same socket)

Depends though - if he buys an i5 for editing he'd actually see lower performance than a 4700MQ or 3630QM

i know laptop's i7 are pretty powerful as i owned one myself `-`

The two biggest things I want to over come are CPU throttling and more USB ports.

So based on what everyone has said Mounting the mother board to a case doesn't seem too bad of an option.

Intel Core i7 6700HQ isn't better than my 4690K. I have tested it with my brothers laptop and my i5

Thing is, most laptop connectors are non-standard so hooking up the case to the power button, the keyboard, the fron USBs, (GPU is not even possible). You also need to do some drilling. Not practical

Nope. The cooler mounting of laptops is designed by each OEM - ASus coolers cannot me bounted on a Lenovo board and vice versa

5700HQ is exactly the same performance as a Xeon E3 1231v3 - test mutlicore in Cinebench and watch your i5 get rekt

Yep. I am defiantly going to look for other boards I resort to this board.

There's an number of boards but they tend to be industrial, expensive and don't share the same power delivery the desktop boards can.

 

Here's an Asrock one with i7-4700MQ

 

IMO probably better off selling the laptop and going full DT.
