My Very First Build - It Begins! Tips?

Wadeford

Hi everyone,

So for the last six months, I've been patiently accumulating parts for a new PC, and yesterday I finally bought the last of them. Unboxing and building can begin!

I've never built a PC from scratch before, though I've taken old ones apart and reassembled them, or upgraded parts,  etc. I'm a little nervous I have no admit, because while I feel confident that I know how to go about it, this is virgin territory for me, and I don't want to screw it up. I've sunk over $2000 (Australian) into this project, so making a dumb beginners error and frying my fancy new rig would make me a sad panda.

As part of my preparation, I'm rewatching a bunch of old build guides that Linus has done, but I'm really keen for everyone's help just in terms of general do's and don'ts, and things to watch out for that a first time builder could quite easily miss. Also, I'm posting this thread rather than just reading old threads about new builds because I thought it would be a good idea to include the specific parts I've bought in case anyone has come across particular issues with particular components.

So, without further adieu, here is what I'll be working with :

Case: NZXT Phantom II 530 Full Tower

CPU: FX-8350

Mobo: Gigabyte 970 Gaming

RAM: 2x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 2133 DDR3

GPU: Xfx R9 Nano

SSD: Sandisk Ultra II 240GB

HDD: WD Blue 4TB

PSU: Thermaltake 750W modular

Monitor: LG 27" 4K LED IPS

Keyboard/Mouse: Coolermaster Devastator bundle

Headset: Kingston HyperX Cloud II

and a Sims 4 mousepad :) I also have a random DVD drive and wireless adapter,  but I can't remember what they are. LG and Netgear I think.

So that's it. I hope this post hasn't been too long, and hopefully all will go well :) I'll post some photos of my rig in all it's glory at some point.

Thanks in advance :)

Wade

Be sure to be careful when installing the GPU. On my first build I forced it and broke my USB header clean off the motherboard, although I don't think you'll have that problem with a nano as it's smaller. Just take your time, and be confident when handling the parts; they don't break as easily as you think.

Another thing; triple check that your ram is the right way around, it's happened to me a couple of times where I'm stood forcing it in, only to realise it's the wrong way.

No, it isn't. Also, @Wadeford, in all honesty, that's not really the best price to performance you can get. The CPU would bottleneck the GPU and that PSU (if it's a SMART one) is awful.

No. It's not the same price. The nano got a price drop a while ago and can be found for like $350 if you're lucky (usually $400~).

I meant GBP. Also, you may notice it's $50 cheaper and it's a Fury X core.
