Hello, so as you can tell from my signature, I have an overclocked 4670k at 1.25 volts that runs too hot for my tastes. Under my ancient H80i (I feel like im playing chicken with the life of the pump on it), I get about 70-80C in most of my games with the exception of Rainbow 6 Siege which likes to turn my little toaster into an industrial furnace. Now I know that the thermal interface on Haswell is complete shit. So, I'm wondering if I took off the heat spreader and just ran my waterblock straight on the die, how much of a temperature change should I expect? And do you think it would be worth risking my poor little i5 for better temps?

Take a look at linus' delidding video. He used a 4790k and everything.

My native language is C++

lol, just re-apply thermal paste and place the IHS back, pump on the die is going to bring you so much hassle that isnt worth it

if its a bad IHS thermal interface, you'll see a big temperature drop

i think people are experiencing around 10 celcius drop normally, depending on each case

thats totally up to you

do you have cash to fork out a new one if this one dies? :P

i personally wouldnt even bother, and just suck it up until im going to upgrade or something

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I thought he used a 6700k? Besides, skylake doesn't need it. Haswell on the otherhand uses your grandma's turd to help transfer heat from the die to the heat spreader. They tried to fix their sins with Devil's canyon, but those of us who were stupid enough to by the previous generation are stuck with this problem.

Yeah, that's the main thing that's holding me back from finding a vice and going at it with a razor. I plan to get a job at a local computer repair shop this summer, but as of right now, well, let's just say drones are expensive :P

You are voiding your warranty and have a chance to ruin your CPU, however if you are willing to take that risk I say try it. I personally would spend money on a new cooling solution. I have a cooler master hyper 612 version 2. I was debating on getting a mid-range AIO liquid but for less money you can get a very good aircooler that is MUCH more reliable and performs as well as liquid. I am glad I did it keeps my 4790k under 80 degrees OC'd at 4.8ghz under load.

I could put an LN2 pot ontop of my chip, the problem is heat gets trapped between the die and the IHS.

If you have a little extra cash you could sell your 4670k and get 4690k. It has better heat specs

If I'm swapping my chip, I want a 4790k for my CAD work, occasional streaming/recording and rendering. Also if I did that I would be without my rig for awhile. I can't live with just my chromebook!

Buy the chip you want. Then sell the old one. If you have decent credit Newegg or Paypal will give you 6 months interest free; which will give you time to sell your old chip. Ebay is pretty consistent when selling high grade CPUs, however you will take a slight loss.

I'm 16, financing isn't an option for me.

I say if you are feel comfortabel with simpler handiwork and have a very good blade or (in my opinion) better a vice together with a very good thermal paste or even some fluid metal than why not ?

But when you go all in than I would even straighten the IHS topside by sandering it and than apply fluid metal even on the topside of your CPU (I like to take as less as I can but on both sides CPU and cooler, since I don't trust the surfaces tension from the fluid metal :D )

But keep in mind the fluid metal directly on copper can produce a nealy solid connection, if you have clean copper on both sides you should or even have to buy a new cooler to get the cooler of and you have to sander the surface from the IHS every time if you want to reprace the cooler.

Just get yourself a new cooler imo. Or pick up a AIO later on when you get the money with a 240 or 280 rad, I will vouche for the H110i GT.

There isn't much need to swap, the 4670k is a great CPU, especially if you're running it at 4.4GHz. Delidding is a cost effective way to drop your temps and even get a higher overclock. If you don't want to risk it in the vise, delid tools exist at 1/10th the cost of replacing your CPU if things go south.

Why not just get a better cooler? The H80i isn't the best choice if you want a high overclock. I live in the tropics and my 4670k never goes above 60 degrees (4.4GHz @ 1.2V) while gaming.

Get a good air cooler (Noctua, Cryorig or BeQuiet ) or a better AIO (a 240/280 mm unit from Corsair or NZXT).

Well I'm also poor because I spent all my money on my drone. What cooler do you have? Also I've discovered that if I want to be stable above 4.4ghz, I need to push way too much voltage. I couldn't get it stable at 1.3V and it was pushing 90C under gaming load.

If you need that much voltage for 4.4GHz it's save to say that your chip isn't the best overclocker. I would just settle with a lower oc until you can afford a better cooling solution or sell the 4670k and get a 4790k (and hope to hit the silicon lottery).

I have a Noctua U14S in my rig.

I only push 1.2V for 4.4. Anything higher requires more than my cooler can handle.
