USB-to--RS232 converter issues

alright so I've found myself in need of a RS232  cable, but since computers don't have RS232 ports for some reason, I have to use a converter. Now I have some old USB-to-RS232 converter, but I'm not sure how to use it. I've tried connecting it to both devices but it seems like it really won't work this simply. There are some CDs that came with the purchase, years ago. It seems like drivers, but the drivers stop at Windows XP. As tried installing those, but I can't install them.

Also, the CD says  nothing about 64bit or 32bit operating systems support, I'm using Windows 8.1 64bit.

Is there any chances I'll get my old converter to work with Windows 8.1 64bit?

Should maybe all the manufacturers' converters work with the same drivers, since the protocols are defined by standards? Or does every manufacturer demand their own driver?

I don't understand these converters well enough, I know that RS232 is a serial interface, but aside from that I just don't know how this is supposed to work.

The USB converters are a pain if they have a poore driver. Have you tried compatibility mode?

Also all MoBos (even the gaming once) still have RS-232 but only as a header on the PCB. You should be able to finde a breakout cable for <5$.

unless there are drivers for 64bit, your only option is to buy another one or find a PCIe card with the RS 232 port.

what company manufactured it?  You may be able to find modern drivers for it, but I'm not sure.
