Partition hard drive for Ubuntu Server?

Is it possible to partition 30GB of my 1TB HDD (556GB Free) to run Ubuntu Server on and play around with that a bit? Sorry for being a total noob but I usually don't do this kind of thing  (btw its essential I keep all of the data on the HDD that's already there, unfortunately creating a backup is not possible because A: I don't have another hard drive/storage medium big enough and B: I'm broke so I cant afford any storage medium to temporarily store the data

Yes, go into [control panel] [sytem and security] and find the [create and format hard disk partitions]

Find the drive you want to partition and right click it and select [shrink volume]

 

Enter the amount you want to shrink the volume by.

cheers but I actually just ripped a 160GB 7200RPM SATA drive out an 11 year old laptop (dell inspiron 5100).... dafuq was that doing in there....
