I'm pricing different components for my new build, and using Jet.com discounts I've found that an i7-6700 non-k and an inexpensive b150/h170 mobo is cheaper in some cases than an i5-6600K with CPU cooler and Z170 board.

I am mainly gaming, not doing any video editing / streaming or workstation apps... so I know I don't need an i7, but this has kind of thrown me for a loop!

What would you buy?

I'd get the i7 and the H170 MB.... You get hyper-threading which is useful for DX12.

To be honest, most games will benefit from a higher core clock than hyper-threading, but the difference is minimal. From a computer useful life perspective, you'll get far more mileage/use out of the i7.

The only difference a K edition gives you is overclocking ability, nothing more as far as I'm aware of.

Going with an i5 removes the ability to have hyper-threading, which video editing and games (are beginning to) love more cores aswell.

i5, cuz with a 212 evo you could then overclock it to at least 4.6 ghz probably, which would give it about as good multi core as the 6700 and it would have better single core performance. Also z170 mobos have more features n stuff.

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

buy the overclockable i5 in most gaming cases an i5 is all you may ever need plus it's overclockable so you can squeeze out more perfomance but i will acknowledge that your sacrificing hyperthreading so really choose what you want more hyperthreading or overclocking I would choose overclocking

i posted this yesterday in case you didnt see it, $420 after rebate, might be an option. the cpu itself for the i7-6700 non-k is $320, not sure what mb you were looking at but this should make it close to what you were looking at.

if i post a link to amazon try to use the LTT affiliate code to help the channel http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=linustechtips-20
