Help with finding integer within .txt file line

A hint: Why not split your string on whitespace?

input_file.readLine.split()

will do this for you. It returns a list for you to iterate over

Anymore help you can give me? I have more stuff I need help on I don't understand as well.

So let's say I do:

 

splitStrings = input_file.readLine.split()

 

Assume your .txt file has the line "I am 20 years old".

 

Once you load the file in (I assume you are doing this correctly, print() is your best friend for testing),

 

 

Then

splitStrings = ["I", "am, "20",  "years", "old"]

Now, what the split function does is, if no parameters are passed in (like in our case), then the delimiter (the character to split words on) is simply whitespace (space, tab, newline). So using split with no parameters is a neat way to split up a line into a bunch separate words. We now have our array of separate words, time to check if any of the "words" are in fact a digit.

 

 

We have a digit in the 2nd index (counts start from 0). We as the programmer know this, how can we get python to acknowledge this? Iterate through the array splitStrings.

 

How do we iterate through the array?

 

for x in splitStrings:
	do something

 

What this will do is it will loop through every element in splitStrings, starting from "I", and assign it to a variable x. What do you want to do with x? You want to check if it's a digit, if so, print it, and move on to the next word in the array. If it's not, skip it, and move on to the next word in the array.

 

Now all you need to figure out how to check if x is a digit. Hint: The exact function you need is in your code

 

Once again, print() is your best friend. This isn't a big program, but it could be challenging for someone new to programming. Why not split up the tasks? First ensure you're loading the file properly using print statements. Then use the for loop above but replace

 

do something

 

with

 

print(x)

to ensure you're loading and looping properly.
