Old server, what to do with it?

Hi all,


Not long ago I acquired a HP DL380 G3 and a HP DL360 G2.
I successfully sold the DL360 as it was entirely useless to me, but I kept the DL380 to play with.

I've now put that one up for sale as well, but I'm pretty sure it might take weeks for someone respond to it.

 

In that meanwhile it's just lying here.

 

Anyone has any idea what I could to with it? Except from NAS and Minecraft server, done that already.

Right now it's just lying in my bedroom because I have no space anywhere in our small house to put it.

Set it up for folding. Always a good idea.

Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but you dont know why. In this computer, theory and practice are combined: Nothing works and i dont know why.

 

Atleast i can manage Some things, like my current OC personal best.

Home music player/server? Can't think of much 1gb of ram is good for

I can't get the software to run on this system, always crashes instantly. Logs show no error, the application just fails to launch.

Me neither.

It's got 1.5GB RAM.

 

I just hope I can get this thing out of here ASAP, it's just wasting space atm and I have no valid use for it.

Don't really know what you could do with it but I do have a storage tip. You can build a kinda case thing out of 2x4 wood and put the servers vertical.

Right now the DL380 is standing virtual behind my desk, it doesn't really stand in the way there but the noise man!

I don't have any other spots to put the server that are not directly next to my PC and bed.

I run daphile with 0.5gb ram 

Perhaps get a cheap wireless adapter and toy with pfsense

There are some other distributed computing groups aside from folding, not nearly as famous/large but you could try them

I feel ya man those suckers are loud my friend has a HP DL380 G3 and its uber loud. I'm not really sure what you can do. Is is possible the fans can be controlled with software?

I might do that.

A friend of mine suggested bitcoin mining, but this machine would be like 500 times more expensive to operate than what I get from it lol.

Bitcoin mining is dead for the home PC user.

 

The server is right now deployed with Windows XP.

I don't have Windows Server Edition,

I don't no, I think there is but it doesn't work because I am not running Windows Server Edition.

When the system is booted, you can pull out all the fans and wire up some 90mm fans or something, but that's insanely ghetto and the system really needs good cooling as it heats up very quickly without proper cooling solution.

Its dead for anything short of a funded high end operation, ANT too

 

You could use rdp and make it a metaphorical back burner for large file downloads or tedious task

Yea I have the link, but unless you live in the Netherlands there's no way I'm gonna get this thing shipped to you.

The entire machine weigs over 25kg (55lbs), shipping cost is gonna be ridiculous.
