Hey LTT,

I'm doing a computer build in the coming month, probably end of April to beginning of May is when it will come together. I am building it mainly for my live stream (https://www.twitch.tv/cereal5) (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Nz7r23).

The main question I have is the graphics card. Do I:

1. simply wait for a price cut or good MIR to buy the graphics card (either GTX 970 or R9 390)

2. buy a cheap GPU, like a 750 Ti/950 or r7 2/360-370 used and wait for nvidia prices to go down with the introduction of pascal and then purchase a 970/980/980 Ti or whatever I have money for by then

3. another idea that I haven't thought of.

I mainly play World of Tanks, which is probably only slightly harder to run than a game like LoL or DotA 2. I do also play games like American Truck Sim, ARK: survival evolved, and do plan on purchasing newer more intensive games (now that i would have something that would be capable of running them).

Thanks for any input!

It depends on how urgently you need a dedicated GPU.

If it's urgent, get it now.

Not really, wait for sale, and use your iGPU.

Not at all, wait for Pascal and Polaris, and use your iGPU.

When you're buying, buy exactly what you need in the first round. Don't buy cheap and then upgrade, it's a waste of money.

Between the GTX 970 and the R9 390, I'd recommend the R9 390.

I wasn't wrong. It's extremely rare that I am. I provided sources as well. Different devs can disagree. Further, we now have confirmed discrepancy from Twitter about he use of the pre-release 1080 driver in AMD's demo despite the release 1080 driver having been out a week prior.

You apparently haven't seen his responses to questions on YouTube. He is very condescending and aggressive in his comments with which there is little justification. He acts totally different in his videos. I don't necessarily care for this content style and there is nothing really unique about him or his channel. His endless dick jokes and toilet humor are annoying as well.

the problem is that the prices wont drop significantly for a year or so. since linus already implicated on the wan show that they have a sample i think they got production running pretty well. 16nm finfet is nothing new so thats not surprising. honestly if your looking on the cpu improvements from 28nm to 14nm (which are quite big) i would really go for pascal when it launches.

Desktop Build Log http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/486571-custom-wooden-case-with-lighting/#entry6529892

Would it be feasible to run an iGPU while gaming and streaming said game? I just dont want to take a $50-100 loss if i get a 970 or 980 and it drops in two months. I wouldnt mind spending the extra bit on a cheaper one now either, even if later it just becomes a back up. Unless it's not worth my money at all

It's not. Gaming on Intel iGPUs are already quite limiting on its own because of Intel's poor iGPU performance. I don't think you'll get anywhere near good FPS with streaming at the same time.

How urgently do you need to game and stream? Or how quickly do you need the GPU? Completely depends on whether you can wait, and how long.
