From amd to Intel build log

lorddjj

I am going to be going from a 8350 + gtx 970 on a asus board with a wd black2 drive to a new intel style build

Cpu-  i5 6600k @ 239 or a xeon e3 @ 201 Gpu - same 970 @ 0

Motherboard -gigabyte g1 sniper @105 (i5 path) or msi Z97 PC MATE $97 (for xeon path)

Psu - allready own a 650 watt corsair

Ram - either a Kingston set of ddr4 or ddr3

Cooler- for either would be a hyper 212 Evo $ 25 if I go i5 it will be water cooled at some point but later on down the road

Storage- ocz 240 $60 optional another  hgst 2tb $40-55 (allready own one there the best bang for buck speed to storage) it's read and write is about 140 mbs so there ok for storage and most games

Total i5 upgrade $ 475 xeon upgrade $433

***note a large amount of people have used that xeon and say it has no igpu no overclock but games like a i7 for the price of a i5

If I could get some feedback on which path you would take and maybe even a whole new build I would like to stay around 400 max 500  I want to make a sweet spot build and a nice set up to go with me 970 it will be gaming at 1080 for now until 4k monitors come down in price

Xeon E3 1231v3 is the minimum I'd say. 6600K MUST be OCed to make the upgrade worth it.

Though I'd seriously suggest waiting for Zen and Kaby Lake at the end of the year. Games use 8 threads quite well nowadays so upgrading won't incrase performance that much, Not to mention Nvidia drivers handle multiple threads better

FYI - if your PSU is a CX, VS or CS - replace that first.

If you WANT to buy now, Xeon - it's faster than the i5 in multi-threaded workloads.
