Good (insert time specific word here) everyone! This is my first time here on the forums of LinusTechTips and I thought that another group of experts' advice would be appreciated. This is my third revision of my computer build planner and this is probably my last stop, so lets get started!

Firstly, I'll answer the questions,

1) Budget & Location: I don't exactly have a budget, but I'm a College student and over the summer I'll be working (and trying to switch departments to make more money than I already do) for three months so a month and a half to two months of pay (works out to be roughly $2100-$2800) is factoring into certain parts that I've chosen. I live in the States specifically the MN-IA region if that makes any difference at all.

2) Aim: With this computer I'd be mainly playing games (i.e. Battlefield series, Bioshock series, Fallout series, Skyrim, Black Desert Online, etc.) but with myself being a College student I might end up doing some homework (Microsoft Office, Sibelius) on it at times.

3) Monitors: The monitor I plan on getting is in the list that I will list later. I only plan on buying the one and not getting a multi-monitor setup as I do not particular like them all that much. It's 2560 x 1440 also.

4) Peripherals: The peripherals I plan on buying are in the list as well. I will be purchasing Windows 10 too, but also is in the list.

5) Upgrading: I'm not technically upgrading but I currently game on my ASUS G751JL ROG laptop and would like to further dedicate this laptop to more school orientated uses and delegating gaming to the PC.

And with that, here is my computer build

UPDATE: Going to keep the older link for history purposes, but here it is.

You may notice that I have three drives on the build; the Kingston HyperX Fury is a dedicated Bootdrive, I did this as it actually saved me money. I previously had a Samsung 750 EVO 512 GB that was $300 so I just replaced that with a Mushkin Reactor 1TB SSD and added a Kingston.

Along with that I will ABSOLUTELY NOT change my case. Many Corsair fans will detest this but I'm a major Razer fanboy. The case is one of the few things in this build that are unchangeable to me.

If you have any further questions you know the drill and I will try to make a swift response

Thank you kindly!

That is an excellent build and the case is great, I have an S340 (I am also a razer fanboy, wish I had the razer edition, but was literally on the edge of my budget ...) and it is a great case (apart from space, my hands are tiny and I can hardly do anything in the shroud :/) so the H440 should not dissapoint. Blackwidow Chroma is also great, I have one :D

If you wanted to save money...:

- DDR4 - 2133MHz Kingston HyperX RAM

- ?

- ??

Also, in your place I'd get the MSI GTX 980Ti as I don't like the one you've chosen but personal preference :)

Good luck! :D

Great build, only,

1. There is no need to get thermal paste cooler master provides some with the 212, and lets face it its not that much of a difference at this point,so why throw money down the drain.

2. 32gb of memory is I believe excessive, 16gb is fine and the set you chose has no benefit over anything else, if you go with a pair of 2x8gb corsair lpx ram/ kingston fury you will be just fine.

3. The gpu you chose is 110 usd more than the cheapest one in pcpart picker and I can't really see a point apart from aesthetics, if that is the point then sure go for it.

4. You can get windows for much cheaper from g2a or penguin I believe.

With all these things considered, you could get http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/, at a price quite close to what you are paying now, which gives you 980ti sli, or even better, just go with a single 980ti ans ave yourself 600usd.

Also keep in mind, nvidia is about to announce their new gpus and since you are going to be building this in August from what I understand, perhaps its worth the wait.

Read reviews on the the part picker and of course newegg, and with its higher core clock at 1.32 GHz I thought I should go with that one instead of the one I chose before (which I don't remember now).

For whatever reason, the RAM I had suddenly raised $100 (originally $69.99), so I took both of your points and changed to this instead (thankfully, because that red RAM would of looked awful aesthetically). I also removed the thermal paste and I'm currently looking into a different and cheaper GPU.

Thanks!

just remember 2133 is the slowest set of ddr4 you can get. so if you want faster ram then look into that. but it should be fine for gaming. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are trying to tell me that 2133 is not enough? That is 25GB/s+ read/write speed and you should need no more. Dual channel, even better ... in no way is it insufficient.

I changed your boot drive to an 850 Evo % years vs 3 years of warranty.

I changed your RAM to something taht costs half of what you chose and does the same thing and is NOT ugly.

I changed your GPU. The Matrix is a good card but not wort the extra 100 bucks you pay over the basic cards. I feel the extra 59 bucks of the Amp! Extreme which is a bit quieter at the same temps is are still within reason. I doubt you will notice any difference in overclocking as the AMP! is also know for good OC results.
I changed your wireless LAN USB adapter to a PCIe card as a friend of mine had severe probelms with multiple adapters he tested, including the one you had on your list. PCIe cards are just plain better!

Might I also suggest that you go with a z170 deluxe instead? I understand if you like the RoG thing (or the colour scheme) I did as well once, but owning the deluxe I have to say that it is a great board and has onboard wifi as well ( a very good solution actually!).

In addition, if you won't get the 980ti sli, why not spend some of the savings on an m.2 ssd? I am given to understand they are quite worth it.

not insufficient I just wanted faster ram personally that's why I said for gaming its plenty you can do an 8gb kit of 2133 and be fine but they said budget is no problem and I wanted to let them know there is faster cheeper then the original mushkin and the new set is cheeper cause its slower

As you will mauanlly OC any way the baseclock becomes completely irrelevant. Your right on the reviews though. It is a great card noise/temp wise and the PCB is also very cpabale. It is just not worth the added cost for what it delivers compares to the cheaper competition.

I agree, I just wasn't bold enough to also change that and add additional cost.

Well what I am saying is...

you say you wanted faster RAM, but do you have evidence that ever in your life your RAM has been writing/reading at 100%? :D

To paraphrase Linus:

"You will very likely never get a benefit of higher clocked memory apart from memory benchmarks." lol
