If you want the (slightly legal) cheap version, goto r/microsoftsoftwareswap. Otherwise, you can buy licenses on Newegg or Amazon.

My native language is C++

You might not even need the server version, what are you trying to achieve?

Windows 2012 R2 shares the same kernel and base features as Windows 8 - apart from Software RAID5, unless you're going to be enabling server roles/features, then theres really no difference.

Just would like to upgrade my server from windows 7 (os that I already had and could install on the server) to a upgraded window os that will get update I'm looking at windows server 2012 or 2016 issue with 2016 I would rather go ahead and buy 2016 instead of waiting for it to get out of beta or what ever it is in right now

Basically with Essentials you can only have 2 CPUs, max of 64GB RAM, and do not get HyperV. You also cannot run two Essentials servers on the same domain IIRC.

However, if you were running Win7 before, why not just upgrade to Win10? Its fairly easy to break Server 2012 if you don't know what you are doing.

you can't buy 2016 because it's still in beta :)

Windows 10 is way to junked up for just running couple of servers rather get a server os that I can use

Should I just go with a Window server 2012 Datacenter?

FYI: Datacenter editions usually cost around 5000$ :)
so standard, essentials or foundation would be better

I'll point out that the r/microsoftsoftwareswap stuff isn't exactly above board, so if you buy a licence off there it may not work, and licences may be deactivated over time if they get blacklisted.

You could get a free upgrade to Windows 10 - just remove any media components, or slipstream an install iso using something like WinReducer to remove additional components from being installed.

If you really have your mind set on a server version, which it sounds like you wont be using any of the server features - then as mikat said, standard, essentials or foundation.

I've used the win 2008r2 then the WHS2011 ... Been running xpenology for a few months now... Only thing I really miss is the rdp connection to the server.

If everything works on your win7, I wouldn't spend the money just yet :)

Well it does but I think I'm hold of and buy 2016 server it may have windows bash in it and if it does I get the command wget and i love that command so I automatic update my jar files.

You already can get the wget binary for windows - the Bash integration will be more geared towards developers, so only offers limited CLI functionality. Also keep in mind that the Ubuntu CLI will be sandboxes from Windows functions, so the only thing it really shares with your Windows is the file system.
