Xeon LGA1366 Setup

I could get my hands on an old server from my company. The IT-Boss said, that they don't need it anymore and probably are going to throw it away. So, I thought of taking it for myself. The Server is a:

Fujitsu Primergy TX200 S6

1x Intel Xeon DP E5645, 6x 2,4 GHz

Fujitsu D 2799 Mainboard (Dual LGA 1366)

8 GB DDR3 Ram (Unknown speed, I think it’s ECC)

No hard drive

Unknown PSU

If i can get my hands on, I would by some additional parts:

  • Buy a second Xeon CPU -> 70€ on ebay
  • Buy two new CPU cooler -> 30€
  • Hard drive (Already got one lying around) -> 0€

Total: 100 – 120 €  ~ max. 134 $

I'm not entirely sure what to do with it, because my current setup is not that bad (I7 2600, GTX 780TI, 10GB Ram). If the performance different of the Xeon's is not that big (No bottleneck), I may switch my current setup. However there are some problems with the System:

- No PCI-E x16 (Just PCI-E 2.0 x8)

- Probably crappy little PSU

- Bad Single-Core performance

However:

+ I would get it for free ... ^_^

What do you guys think?

Cheerse.

Use it as a NAS maybe? Set it up for folding? Set up a gaming server?

You know how it is, the cow goes "moo", the dog goes "woof" and the gamer goes "The PvP is unbalanced."

Spoiler

Personal Computer: CPU: i7-4790 Mobo: Asrock Z97 Extreme6 Graphics Card: MSI R9-380  Memory: 16GB (8GB x2) G. Skill Sniper Gaming Series PSU: Apevia Warlock 750W Case: NZXT Phantom 410 Series Storage: 240GB SSD (OS) 3TB HDD (data and such) 500 GB SSD (Movies and Large Data Transfers (I'm constantly moving this one around to other computers))

When DX 12 content is released it might offer better performance than your i7-2600. Otherwise if you're gonna sell it let me know for how much :)

PCI-E 2 x 8 is no bottleneck for ... anything really.

But trying to make a gaming rig out of it would be silly.

Play around with virtualization. Forget the second CPU, double the RAM and you'll be able to have 12 virtual machines with a dedicated core and a GB of RAM each.

As a follow up, what's up with damn near every German seller on Ebay only shipping to Germany?

The export price is quit high. For example: A 30kg package with a max size of 120x60x60cm to the USA costs ~ 100€. Within the EU it's ~ 50€. So the seller would need to charge additional 50 - 100€ which would be unfair to everyone living in Germany.

One main reason why I maybe switch is because I want to try out a "2 Gamer 1 CPU" setup. I'm planning to switch to Linux as a primary OS and my current setup doesn't support VT-d.

Yeah, 30kg costs a lot to ship anywhere and shipping is a separate charge from the item price anyway, which you can specify as being dependant on location.

The stuff I'm looking at usually is used CPUs, GPUs and laptops.

Even a GPU (5 KG package) would come in at ~ 35€.
