Used CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Rolling Potatoe,

Well, cpus are pretty much sealed up in a few mm of steel and hard to kill.

If you buy one and it works there is probably nothing wrong with it and will last until its not relevant anymore.

First time buying used PC parts. The Craiglist and Kijiji PC part community is pretty small where live. Has anyone ever bought a used CPU on Ebay? In Luke's Scrapyard Wars followup video he talked about how CPU's are generally fine to buy used. Does that mean that chances are they won't die on you?

I bought a CPU from Ebay. It is the Xeon E5 2670. Also if you get a dead CPU you can file a case with Ebay and you will get a ref2refund.

I bought an i5 2300 for a server and got it running just Thursday night, it's just fine.  Frankly, it's a CPU, 99.99% of the time it will either 'work' and you're fine or be 'dead' and PayPal will refund your money.  (This is also why people tend not to sell dead stuff on eBay, because PayPal refunds and bad ratings on eBay are very bad for business).  It's very, very rare for any CPU to be 'iffy', they're just good or bad.

The i5 2300 also undervolted like a champ. :)

Really, eBay is a GREAT place to get used PC parts and you can find anything you want pretty easily.

I bought a used Xeon E5-1650 on ebay to replace an old i7 that died. It was my first experience buying used PC parts and it went great. As long as the seller has a good reputation you shouldn't have a problem. Also, Ebay and Paypal should help you get a refund if the cpu is dead or not as advertised.
