My current build has an i3 4170, MSI H81M-P33 and an EVGA SSC GTX 950. How much would i benefit from something like an i5 4460? Should i splurge and buy a new z97 or z170 mobo and get a i5 4690k or an i5 6600k? I know i wouldn't get too much of a performance boost until i upgrade my GPU. (Probably going to save for a gtx 970)

You're on Haswell, there is no need to splurge on Skylake -- the benefits.. well, there aren't any, from what I see (even DDR4 isn't that good). Go for just the i5 4460 if you want better performance in games that utilize the extra cores (most), and stick with your H81M board, it's fine.

get a xeon 1231 v3, it fits in your motherboard and should be able to last you for quite some time, unless you wanna overclock

The Xeon is $100 more than the i5 4690 (non k). Is it worth it? I don't do much video editing so i wouldn't utilize all the cores.

wut $100? o-o about $30 bump from an i5 4690 to i7 4790 lol

well if you dont need the extra threads, you can opt for the i5 :D

the xeon is just more powerful in term of multi threaded workload

but single core performance, the i5 should be ever so slightly faster than the xeon because 3.8ghz vs 3.9ghz, assuming same architecture :D but i guess its negligible

Well if I were looking at a locked i5, I'd choose the xeon over it. More room for multitasking if you ever need it.

also, DX12 :D rumored to support multi-thread better

Not even DX12. Newer games that came out in 2015-2016 love more threads.

If gaming you won't notice a difference with the 950. An i3 will still be fine with a 970 or 390 - ask @byalexandr

The Xeon.

You could go up to a 980 Ti. The Xeon is like a locked i7 without the igpu and lower clock speeds. Its pretty strong. Going with either a 970 or 390 is not a problem.

The haswell xeon e3 is the best bang for buck in gaming, IMO.

combine that with a motherboard and memory that is reusable - no brainer.

It will be able to support almost any amount of GPU power you throw at it. Beyond anyone on a budget should be concerned about.
