Which ship should I get?

cortexcortex

Hey,

So, I was wondering which ship I should buy. I don't really have a price limit, but I don't want to overspend much. I've only played the alpha when it was free, and I liked the content.

I was looking into the Constellation Andromeda, a Freelancer, or any other you recommend.

Which do you recommend? Why do you recommend it?

First of all, what do you want to do in the game? Each ship has a role. Are you into trading, mining, exploring, military...?

Even so, I'd recommend you to at least get a one-seater fighter, like an Avenger, a Gladius, or a Hornet.

That's the problem, I don't really know what I want to do in the game. What do you recommend?

Well the freelancer is good for trade and exploration long distance depending on which variant you get, the constellation is also good for those things, the andromeda can be used for heavy space combat though due to its firepower and tankiness. What i suggest you do though is get a smaller ship so you can get a feel for the mechanics of the game first and then upgrade it to something if you feel you want something bigger. Right now I would say that the best ships for beginners IMO are the avenger (go with the titan if you want cargo capacity), the Hornet (super hornet will be the strongest and safest hornet for use) and the gladius (not as directly strong as the avenger but more manoeuvrable and faster). Alternatively you could just get an aurora or a mustang which are the actual starting ships and see where you want to go from there. Remember you can always upgrade your package to a different one if you dont like it.

If you want bigger ships, the retaliator and the constellation are viable.

I honestly would not suggest getting a cutlass, until the ship is fixed. It's kind of a large target that handles poorly in the current iteration.

As for roles, what do you enjoy a lot in other games?

Trading, crafting, salvage and repair, pure pvp dogfighting, pvp special ops, blockade running, exploration, etc.

You don't have to pick a singular role, but any interest you can name, we can help you find a sensible path.

Still new, but learning

I enjoy exploration & contraband (if possible).

@cortexcortexReliant mini-hauler, Cutlass (if fixed), Freelancer, Caterpillar, Constellation, Merchantman, Carrack, Endeavor

Any of those fit that route to some degree. The reliant is a second tier starter ship, the cutlass is a medium ship with different modular options, and both can be used for different roles. Freelancer and Caterpillar are both dedicated to hauling, with caterpillar having more modularity, and freelancer being quite defensible.

The constellation is an all rounded ship with different possibilities, while merchantman is a good hauling vessel that can explore as well. Carrack is dedicated to exploration with far greater distance and likely survivability.

The Endeavor has many capabilities, but depends on if any of those fit your preferences, and if you have the support to manage and protect it decently.

Edit: alternatively, you can get a cheap Avenger now (since it has some cargo space) and just coast on that till you find a ship you want come available.

Thank you so much!

Which constellation would you go for? I'm between the Constellation Andromeda and the Constellation Aquila. Also, how much can I do now if I buy it right now? What I mean is, can I do anything of the mentioned (exploring, etc) with this Alpha version?

You can get cheapest now and upgrade whenever, if that makes it easier. As for what to do in the baby pu, using the discord chat will find you people more knowledgeable than I in the current build.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd say just get yourself the basic Aurora package and wait for another "all ships flyable" weekend closer to the game launch to upgrade. Ship balance and flight mechanics are bound to change between now and launch, so I wouldn't go spending a bunch of money on a ship you might not like in 3 months (although you can earn everything in-game too, so I guess it's all a moot point with enough patience).
