Four 980Ti's

Saw a build with 4 980 Ti's.. Can not figure out what you would be doing where you need four 980's

3 and 4 GPU setups are pretty much "because you can" territory. I still want to add a 3rd 980ti... because I can...

some enthusiasts buy 4 high end cards just to "future proof" their rigs, though I swear they always replace them every generation

The future seems like the past really quicky once you drop $2400 on GPUs.  Especially about a year later when there's even newer and awesomer GPUs you could spend another $2400 on!

That's probably not for games, but benchmarks and world records.

Fire Strike and its derivatives are optimized enough to totally use all GPUs.

Anything more than two is kind of tossing money to the wind.... especially 4... but hey if that's someones thing then more power to them.
