Hey,

I've been working on a server project, and i've successfully installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop and the internet works

but when i installed ESXi 6.0 the lights on the ports (on the mobo and on the router) are on but the internet doesn't work? (the IPMI feature of the motherboard does work)

Specs:
CPU: Dual Xeon E5620 4C/8T 2.4 Ghz

RAM: 6x8GB DDR3 ECC

Mobo: Tyan S7012

what can i do?

You'll have to give a little more information about what you did when trying the internet (do you actually mean internet or just network). Did you create a VM, install an OS, give it an IP address? And for that VM the internet didn't work?

We'll also need more information about the exact network equipment you have, this will influence how you need to setup the networking in ESXi. I'm going to for now assume you don't have network equipment that supports VLANs or have the ability to do inter VLAN routing.

The first thing you need to do after you install ESXi is make sure the Management Interface has an IP address, this is set by default to DHCP but you can statically assign it. The current IP address will show on the bottom of the ESXi server screen. The first NIC is selected for this task by default also but sometimes the ordering in ESXi does not match the physical port numbering on the motherboard so check that.

Once the ESXi server has an IP address you need to go to http://<ip address> which will take you to the ESXi server web page that has links on it to download the vSphere Client used to manage the server.

Installing and administering ESXi is not as simple as a standard server OS but once you understand the basics of it and get used to how it likes things done it is very simple from that point forward. Virtualization concepts are very different than typical things people are used to when it comes to servers, it's not plug and play from the beginning but once it is up and running it is way more flexible and quicker to work with than physical servers.

@leadeater

i have not installed anything nor do i run vms on the machine yet :)

i cannot access it over the network and the router doesn't see it, but it does see the IPMI and i can access the IPMI through the browser.

because it didn't connect to the network it didn't get an ip address so i just made everything static (with the right gateway and ip and such)

When you press F11 and go to the network settings did you check the assigned NIC for management and does it say it's connected?
