The Ultimate Folding Rig

What would it be?

Dual Xeons?

Quad Titans or quad GTX 690's or 7990's? or are Quadro's better at folding?

From what i have heard AMD cards are better at folding...

PC: Corsair C70 Arctic, FX 9370, Corsair H80i, Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3, Corsair Vengence 16gb, Palit JetStream GTX 970, OCZ Vertex 4 128gb and Western Digital Blue 1Tb + 500gb, Antec Gamer 520w

Peripherals: Logitech G19 and SteelSeries Sensei RAW

Toshiba L50-A: i7 4700mq, 8gb, 1TB HDD, GT 740M 2gb

AMD are on bether on folds vs. Watt.

its not about watt here, its about the best possible folding rig.

I wouldn't put my money on Quadro's since the team that makes work units focuses on more mainstream hardware.

I guess it would be quad titans, not so sure how quad 690 would behave, wouldn't there be some kind of mess with the mobo since you're basically running 8 gpu's?

but on the other hand, I think the 4p amd systems are much more power efficient and would outlast a graphics card in a 24/7 folding scenario. I could be wrong though, but that's what I took from all the stuff I read on folding and 4p vs quad gpu

4p?

@RandomNOOB

Coen113 is right, this is about the absolute best folding system possible within the form factor of a PC case so no server racks or anything like that.

Probably like a asrock extreme11 x79 with watercooled 7990's so you could fill up all 7 pcie lanes.

Four 7990s and a 4770K.

Why a 4770k? I was thinking more like two Xeon E5-2697 v2's, 24 cores and 48 threads http://ark.intel.com/products/75283/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2697-v2-30M-Cache-2_70-GHz

CPU Folding isn't too great, and you might as well save money somewhere.

It's not about saving money or having something that's power efficient, this is about achieving the best possible folding performance, this is one of those "Cost be dammed" scenarios.

TYAN-S8812-Overview-Small.jpg

it has 4 pci-e slots, but the main point of that mobo is to do bigadv work units which give you massive points and you would do that in linux since it will give you even more ppd than in windows and from what I've heard, gpu folding isn't so great in linux

unless you have one of those I linked full of amd cpu's, windows all the way. since you will get most of your ppd from your gpu(s), go with windows. the only time you would go with linux if you have a 2p/4p folding machine that relies only on the cpu.

So what would be a good dual socket board for two Xeon E5-2697 v2's and four Titans?

I would like to say EVGA sr-x would of been a good choice....... but they've stop making those boards. :/ Either too many problems or just wasn't selling enough.

Although Asus equivalent, Z9PE-D8 WS is still selling can hold both that cpu and 4 gpu's.  http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z9PED8_WS/#overview

"Absolute" best - hand down - 4 x 6386 SE - that's 64 cores of raw power, no hyper threading...

Barring that, 48 Core AMD solution... After that, 48 "core" Xeon solution...

Windows and GPU folders will then come in at this point.

Your whole statement of "desktop" form factor is out the window with most of this, as with even a dual Xeon board and Titans, your heat output would be so massive, you would need a huge case, after market fans, or water cooling. Then money just gets stupid expensive. Also, don't forget, pushing dual Xeon and multiple Titans, will need 1000+ watt PSU. Possibly a second, depending on your RAM, mobo, etc...

The other issue with GPU folding - PPD - so bloody random - a 780 can get one project that does 35k and another that does 160k. My 32 core system probably averages about 300K all the time... because it always gets bigadv projects made specifically for these systems.

Check my 4P build logs - google and read up on 4P folding systems, head over to www.hardforum.com and check their distributed computing section - they have the most 4P boxes of any team right now..

Just curious... would 4 7990's work in one system(granted the power draw would be stupid) since they aren't in crossfire? I don't see that windows would have an issue... This could be fun...
