What is the definition of dubstep ?  Should I even care ?

You really shouldn't care.

 

I mean, people in the YouTube comments constantly argue about what really is and isn't dubstep/brostep/drumstep/drum 'n' bass/moombahbrotrapstepbreakdubtrancecore, and nobody ever gets anywhere.

 

In my opinion genres aren't set in stone, they can evolve and change with the culture.

 

To make life easier I just call everything EDM and move on.  No sense getting tangled in the specifics.
